Chapter 6 - The Emergency Board Meeting

By noon, panic had completely consumed the executive suite of Collins & Sterling Enterprises. Daniel called an emergency meeting of the board of directors. The long glass-walled conference room was dead silent as the six senior partners sat around the table, their expressions grim and accusing.

Daniel stood at the head of the table, attempting to project an aura of absolute confidence, though his palms were slick with nervous sweat.

“Gentlemen, let’s not overreact,” Daniel began, forcing a tight, reassuring smile. “We are experiencing a temporary administrative glitch with our primary lending institution. My legal and financial teams are currently working to resolve the issue with the bank executives.”

Arthur, the senior board member and long-time investor, scoffed openly, leaning back in his chair and folding his arms across his chest.

“A temporary glitch, Daniel?” Arthur scoffed. “Our payroll checks bounced this morning across three regional offices. Key suppliers are threatening to pull out of our upcoming developments. And to make matters worse, our institutional backer has completely ghosted us.”

“I am taking care of it personally!” Daniel snapped, his veneer of calm cracking under pressure. “I have a scheduled meeting with the bank’s executive leadership this afternoon. Once I speak with them face-to-face, this misunderstanding will be cleared up.”

What Daniel didn't know was that the meeting he thought he had scheduled was actually an appointment orchestrated entirely by Arthur Vance and me.

At 2:00 PM sharp, Daniel walked through the grand revolving doors of the private banking headquarters downtown. He marched up to the front desk, his tailored overcoat swinging dramatically behind him.

“Daniel Collins,” he announced to the young teller behind the counter with an air of practiced entitlement. “I have an urgent, high-priority appointment with Senior Vice President Arthur Vance.”

The young teller looked up. It was Julian.

Julian’s face remained entirely neutral, though a subtle glint of amusement flickered in his eyes. He tapped a few keys on his terminal.

“Ah, yes, Mr. Collins. Mr. Vance is expecting you. Please take the private elevator to the top-floor executive penthouse. Suite 1200.”

Daniel didn't bother to say thank you. He turned sharply and strode toward the elevator, eager to bully whoever was responsible for freezing his accounts into submission.

When the private elevator doors slid open on the top floor, Daniel stepped out into a sprawling, sunlit reception area furnished with expensive leather couches and contemporary art. A sleek walnut desk stood at the center, behind which sat an executive assistant who nodded politely toward the double oak doors at the end of the hall.

“Mr. Vance will see you now,” the assistant said.

Daniel pushed open the heavy oak doors and marched into the private office, ready to unleash his fury.

“Arthur, we need to talk about—”

Daniel stopped dead in his tracks.

Sitting behind the massive mahogany desk wasn't Arthur Vance.

Sitting in the executive leather chair, dressed in a sharp, custom-tailored emerald-green designer suit that commanded absolute authority, was me.

Arthur Vance stood respectfully beside the desk, holding a leather folder.

For several agonizing seconds, Daniel stared at me as if he were looking at a ghost. His jaw hung open, his eyes darting from my face to the expensive clothes I wore, and finally to the gold nameplate resting on the desk that read: Elena Collins, Chairperson & Managing Trustee.

“E-Elena?” Daniel stammered, taking a stumbling step backward. “What… what is the meaning of this? How are you sitting in this office? Security! Security, get this woman out of here right now!”

No one moved. The security guards standing by the door remained completely still, staring straight ahead as if Daniel didn't even exist.

May you like

A cold, confident smile touched my lips as I slowly interlaced my fingers on the desk and looked up at my estranged husband.

“There is no security coming for me, Daniel,” I said, my voice smooth, chillingly calm, and carrying an echo of absolute power. “Because in case you forgot... you don't own this building anymore. In fact, you don't own anything at all.”
