Part 8: The Judicial Decree

The sun was just beginning to peek over the city skyline when our group walked into Marcus Vance’s high-rise downtown office. Nora Bell’s recorded confession had been successfully uploaded and decrypted, and federal marshals were already moving in to secure the corporate headquarters of Lawson Fertility Networks.
Caleb stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the awakening city. His suit jacket was rumpled, his lip still slightly swollen from the brawl at the docks, but his posture radiated absolute authority.
The heavy glass door opened, and Marcus walked in, followed by two federal agents in dark suits and a middle-aged man holding a thick leather portfolio—Judge Thomas Miller.
“Mr. Lawson, Dr. Lawson,” Judge Miller said, nodding respectfully. “Agent Vance briefed me on the situation, and we’ve reviewed Ms. Bell’s recorded statement along with the forensic audit of the trust accounts.”
“And David and Elena?” Caleb asked, turning away from the window.
“They’ve been detained at corporate headquarters attempting to shred physical ledger copies,” the lead federal agent replied smoothly. “Warrants for corporate fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy have been formally executed. They aren't going anywhere.”
A profound wave of relief washed over me. I closed my eyes for a second, letting out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for twenty-four straight hours.
“What about the baby’s legal status, Your Honor?” I asked, stepping forward, my heart skipping a beat. “The pre-birth parentage order was executed under fraudulent pretenses by David and Elena. Does that invalidate our parental rights?”
Judge Miller offered a warm, reassuring smile. “Not under these specific circumstances, Dr. Lawson. While the conspirators manipulated the documentation to frame you, biological testing confirms that the infant is indeed the genetic offspring of both you and Mr. Lawson, utilizing your legally stored repository samples.”
He opened his portfolio and slid two freshly printed documents across the mahogany table.
“Given that you both immediately stepped forward to assume guardianship, and with the fraudulent interference of your executives now fully exposed by federal authorities, I am issuing a permanent, unassailable parentage decree recognizing you both as the legal, rightful parents of Baby Girl Lawson.”

I stared at the paper. My name. Caleb’s name. And below it, the official judicial seal.
“You can name her whatever you wish,” Judge Miller added kindly. “She’s cleared for discharge from the hospital whenever you’re ready to take her home.”
