Chapter 8 - The Clash of Shadows

Marcus gestured to one of his men. The man nudged Megan forward. She stumbled, her legs weak, but she kept her eyes locked on me. As she passed Marcus, he grabbed her by the arm, pulling her back.

"Do you think I'm stupid, Emily?" Marcus sneered. "You bring the boy, or nobody leaves. I know he's in your car."

He signaled his second henchman, who began walking toward my Volvo.

"No!" I screamed.

At that exact moment, the dark shipping containers around us erupted with light. High-beam headlights cut through the rain as three unmarked police SUVs sped onto the pier, blocking Marcus's escape routes.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!" a megaphone boomed.

Marcus’s men panicked. The man heading toward my car drew a firearm, but Detective Vance, appearing from the shadows of a container, fired a single, warning shot into the air. "Drop it!"

The henchman threw his hands up and dropped his gun.

But Marcus was desperate. He pulled a small pistol from his coat pocket and grabbed Megan, using her as a shield. "Back off! Or I swear I’ll kill her!"

The rain poured down, blurring my vision. My heart was in my throat. Megan was trembling in his grip, her eyes wide with terror.

I looked at Marcus. I saw the desperation in his eyes—the weakness of a man who realized his empire was crumbling. I had to distract him.

"Marcus!" I shouted, taking a step forward, completely unarmed. "Look at me! You've lost! The FBI has the files. They were uploaded hours ago. Your bank accounts are being frozen right now. Even if you shoot us, you have nowhere to run!"

He hesitated, his eyes darting around the circle of flashing police lights. That split second of distraction was all Megan needed. She threw her weight backward, driving her elbow into Marcus’s ribs.

He gasped, his grip loosening. Megan fell to the wet asphalt.

Detective Vance lunged forward, tackling Marcus to the ground. The pistol skidded across the wet concrete and splashed into the river. Within seconds, officers swarmed him, pinning his arms behind his back and clicking the handcuffs into place.

"It's over, Marcus," Vance growled, pulling him up. "It's finally over."
