Part 5: The Reunion at St. Jude’s

The executive suite at St. Jude’s Hospital looked more like a five-star hotel room than a medical ward.

Soft jazz played quietly from a hidden sound system. A massive bouquet of white lilies sat on the mahogany table by the window, filling the room with a clean, subtle fragrance.

When Emmett pushed the door open—walking gingerly on his newly healed feet thanks to Dr. Vance’s aggressive treatment—he stopped dead in his tracks.

Mara was sitting up in bed, a healthy flush back in her cheeks, breathing smoothly without the desperate rattle that had haunted her chest for weeks. She was laughing softly at something a nurse was saying.

"Mom?" Emmett choked out.

Mara turned her head, and her eyes widened in disbelief. "Emmett!"

She threw off the light blanket, ignoring the nurse's protests, and practically flew across the room to wrap her arms around her son. Emmett buried his face in her shoulder, letting out a breath he felt like he’d been holding since the day the eviction officers first banged on their door.

"Oh, baby, look at you," Mara whispered, kissing the top of his head. "They told me... they said some men brought you here, that you were safe, but I couldn't believe it until I saw you."

"I'm okay, Mom. I'm really okay," Emmett said, pulling back to look at her. She looked ten years younger, color in her face, breathing easily. "How do you feel?"

"I feel like I can run a marathon," she smiled, though her eyes were shining with tears. "And this room... Emmett, the doctors, the medicine, they told me everything has been paid for. By a man named Luca Burnham. Who is Luca Burnham?"

Before Emmett could answer, the door swung open.

Luca walked in, followed by Jax and little Lily, who was holding a stuffed teddy bear twice the size of her head.

Mara stepped back slightly, her maternal instinct flaring as she looked at the towering, scarred man in the black leather jacket. But Lily broke away immediately, running straight toward Emmett with a bright, gap-toothed grin.

"Emmett!" Lily cheered, grabbing onto his pant leg.

Emmett smiled, crouching down to pat her head. "Hey, kiddo. You doing okay?"

Luca stopped at the foot of the bed, his dark eyes meeting Mara’s nervous gaze. He offered a respectful, solemn nod.

"Mrs. Holloway," Luca said, his voice deep and smooth. "I apologize for the intrusion. I just wanted to check on you myself."

Mara clutched her hospital gown, her brow furrowing in a mix of confusion and awe. "You... you're the one who paid for all of this? Why would you do that for us? We don't have any money, we don't have—"

"You raised a son with a spine of titanium," Luca interrupted, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Your son saved my daughter's life. In our culture, that makes us brothers in arms. From this day forward, nothing bad touches you or Emmett. Ever again."

Jax stepped forward, holding out a sleek black keycard. "And as for the bastard who threw you out on the street—Henderson?" Jax smirked. "Let's just say he decided to retire early and move to a very quiet farm in upstate Montana. He won't be bothering anyone ever again."

Mara stared at the two dangerous, powerful men, then looked down at her son, whose chest was puffed out with a quiet, hard-earned pride she hadn't seen since his father passed away.
