Part 2: The Envelope Beneath the Bed

My phone vibrated again.

A single pulse against my leg.

Daniel's face appeared beneath the edge of the mattress.

For one impossible second, our eyes met.

Then a loud knock echoed through the suite.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

"Room service!"

Daniel jerked upright.

"We didn't order anything," Marcus muttered.

Another knock.

"Complimentary champagne for the groom."

Daniel cursed under his breath.

"Get rid of them."

As Marcus walked toward the door, I slid my hand across the carpet and grabbed the white envelope.

I tucked it beneath my jacket just as Daniel stepped away.

The suite door opened.

A young hotel employee stood outside pushing a silver cart.

"I'm sorry for the interruption, gentlemen."

While Daniel argued with him, I crawled silently toward the far side of the king-size bed.

Every movement sent fire through my knees.

Five feet.

Three feet.

One.

I reached the bathroom door, slipped inside, and locked it without making a sound.

Only then did I finally breathe.

My hands were shaking as I opened Isabelle's envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Valerie,

Alexander trusts too easily.

Tomorrow, after the ceremony, Daniel will give him documents to sign. Keep him distracted. Smile. Cry if you have to.

Once the trust transfers, the company and the children's inheritance will be controlled by us.

If Alexander refuses, remind him about the hospital records. He still believes Matthew and Samuel are his.

He can never know what happened twelve years ago.

Burn this after reading.

—Isabelle

For several seconds I couldn't move.

Not because of the money.

Because of the last sentence.

The hospital.

Again.

Before I could think, my phone lit up.

VALERIE CALLING.

I answered quietly.

"Alex?"

Her voice sounded worried.

"I've been looking everywhere. Are you okay?"

I closed my eyes.

"If I ask you something, will you tell me the truth?"

"Always."

"If my family asked you to lie to me tomorrow...would you?"

Silence.

Then she answered without hesitation.

"No."

Something inside me finally settled.

"I need you to trust me now."

"What happened?"

"I'll explain in the morning."

I didn't sleep.

Instead, I called someone I hadn't spoken to in almost six years.

Caroline.

My ex-wife.

She answered after the third ring.

"Alexander?"

"I need to ask you about the night Matthew and Samuel were born."

There was a long silence.

Then I heard her crying.

"I've waited twelve years for you to ask."

By sunrise, I knew everything.

Daniel and Isabelle had intercepted medical paperwork during the chaotic hours after the twins were delivered.

They forged pages.

Removed others.

Then quietly convinced Caroline that there had been a paternity issue.

At the same time, they told me Caroline was hiding something.

For years they fed each of us different lies.

Every argument, every accusation, every broken promise had made them richer.

Whenever we fought, I spent more money fixing problems they secretly created.

Caroline whispered one sentence before hanging up.

"I never stopped believing those boys were yours."

May you like

But she had never been allowed to prove it.

So before the wedding, I arranged one final surprise.
