Chapter 10 - The Golden Sunset

Ten years later...
The afternoon sun dipped below the horizon, painting the Chicago skyline in brilliant shades of violet, gold, and deep amber across the expanse of Lake Michigan.
On the front porch of the Evanston home, now surrounded by blooming flower beds and vibrant rosebushes, sixteen-year-old Sophie sat on the wooden swing, her long brown hair catching the evening breeze.
She held a thick, embossed envelope in her hands, her fingers tracing the golden seal of Northwestern University’s Early Collegiate Science Program.
The screen door opened behind her, and Margaret—now older, with silver hair framing her smiling face, but walking with a steady, graceful stride—stepped out onto the porch holding two mugs of hot apple cider.
“Well?” Margaret asked gently, handing a mug to her granddaughter. “Are you going to open it, or do I need to call Detective Alvarez to investigate the contents?”
Sophie laughed—a bright, musical sound that had filled this home with joy for a decade. She slipped her thumb under the flap and pulled out the crisp acceptance letter.
Dear Sophie Vance, We are thrilled to offer you full admission into the undergraduate biomedical research scholarship program...
Tears welled in Sophie’s eyes, but they were tears of pure triumph. She looked up at her grandmother, the woman who had opened a white c0ffin in the dark of night and pulled her back from the edge of a nightmare.
“I got in, Grandma,” Sophie whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “Full scholarship.”
Margaret set her mug down on the porch railing and pulled Sophie into a fierce, suffocating embrace, burying her face in her granddaughter's shoulder.
“I knew you would,” Margaret murmured, her voice trembling with pride. “I knew it from the very first moment I heard you breathe.”

Sophie wrapped her arms tightly around Margaret’s waist, resting her chin on her grandmother's shoulder as they watched the last golden rays of the sun melt into the horizon.
The past was a distant shadow, powerless against the light of what they had built together. They had survived the dark, and ahead of them lay a world full of promise, love, and endless tomorrows.
