Chapter 6 - The Rescue

The basement exploded into motion.

Richard froze, the syringe slipping from his fingers and shattering against the concrete floor. Before he could reach for the small nickel-plated revolver resting on the embalming table, heavy boots thundered down the metal staircase.

Detective Maya Lin led the charge, her service weapon drawn and aimed directly at Richard’s chest. Behind her, three tactical officers poured into the room, securing the perimeter within seconds.

“Richard Sterling, drop to your knees! Hands behind your head, now!” Lin shouted, her voice cutting through the damp air like a whip.

Richard raised his hands slowly, a cold, mocking smile playing at the corners of his mouth. He didn't look panicked at all.

“Detective Lin,” Richard said smoothly, interlacing his fingers behind his head as he knelt on the cold floor. “You're a bit late for the service, aren't you?”

“Save it for the judge,” Lin snapped, stepping forward and kicking the gun away from Richard before slamming cuffs onto his wrists. She motioned to two officers. “Get him out of here. Read him his rights.”

As officers hauled Richard away, cursing softly under his breath, Detective Lin rushed over to Rosalind and Savannah. With a quick flick of a tactical knife, she sliced through the zip ties binding their wrists.

Rosalind immediately pulled Savannah into her arms, burying her face in the little girl's hair as tears of relief finally broke free.

“You're okay. You're safe now, sweetheart,” Rosalind whispered over and over again.

Detective Lin knelt beside them, offering a gentle, reassuring smile. “Are you both alright? Do we need paramedics down here?”

“We're okay,” Rosalind said, her voice shaking as she looked up at the detective. “How did you find us? Richard said you were stuck in traffic on I-94.”

Lin smirked, holstering her weapon. “Sterling is a smart man, but he's arrogant. He assumed our precinct comms were locked down, but he forgot about my personal encrypted satellite tracker. When I left the hospital, I had a bad feeling about his phone call. I pinged your cell phone's internal GPS chip through the emergency services network before heading out.”

“Thank God,” Rosalind breathed out, closing her eyes in sheer gratitude.

“Not just God, Mrs. Rosalind,” Lin said, helping them both to their feet. “Your granddaughter's quick thinking helped too. Before you left the hospital room, Savannah pressed a panic button on the smart-tag bracelet her aunt gave her for her birthday. It automatically sent her live coordinates to my direct department line.”

Savannah looked up from her grandmother's arms, rubbing her wrists where the zip ties had left red marks. “I knew the bad man with the cloves smell was going to come back,” she said softly.

“Well, he's never coming back for you or anyone else ever again,” Lin promised, guiding them toward the stairs. “The entire operation is dismantled. Gavin, Priscilla, and Sterling are all in custody, facing multiple federal charges of conspiracy, kidnapping, child endangerment, and attempted murder.”

As they emerged from the dark basement into the cool night air outside the funeral home, a row of flashing police cruisers lit up the street. Paramedks were waiting with warm blankets and a medical van.

Rosalind looked up at the star-filled Maplewood sky, feeling an immense weight lift off her shoulders for the first time in days. The nightmare was finally over.
