Chapter 8 - A New Beginning

Six months passed, bringing the fresh, vibrant energy of spring to San Mateo Atenco.

Don Ernesto was permanently placed in a peaceful, specialized care facility nestled in the green hills near Metepec. It was a bright, dignified place with large gardens, soft classical music playing in the hallways, and trained medical professionals who understood how to manage severe dementia.

Through regular medical treatment, Ernesto’s violent mood swings and deep spatial confusion stabilized. He no longer believed he was trapping anyone. Most days, he sat happily on a wooden bench in the facility's courtyard, watching birds and holding a soft wooden rosary.

Every Sunday morning, Rodrigo and Pilar visited him together.

Although Ernesto rarely recognized them as his adult children—often mistaking Pilar for an old teacher colleague or Rodrigo for a friendly gardener—there was no longer anger or fear in their visits. They brought him fresh fruit, listened patiently to his fragmented stories, and gave him the peaceful love he had been unable to give himself for thirty years.

Back at Carmen’s home, life had reshaped itself into a harmonious rhythm.

Lucía had permanently transitioned into her new life. Working part-time at the neighborhood bakery gave her complete financial stability without consuming her life. With her remaining time, she enrolled in an online evening course for child psychology, determined to use her experience to help other families navigating childhood trauma and post-divorce dynamics.

Rodrigo’s transformation was equally profound. Through continuous therapy and sincere effort, he earned back the trust he had lost. The court lifted the supervised visit restrictions, allowing him regular, healthy co-parenting time with Valentina.

He was no longer the defensive, distant man who hid behind excuses. He took Valentina to the park every Tuesday afternoon, helped her with her preschool crafts, and listened attentively whenever she spoke.

One sunny Sunday afternoon, the entire family gathered in Carmen’s backyard for Valentina’s fifth birthday party.

The garden was decorated with bright pink and gold streamers. The air was filled with the joyful chatter of neighboring children, the smell of grilled meat, and the happy sounds of traditional acoustic guitar music playing from a small speaker on the porch.

Valentina ran across the green grass wearing a tiny party crown, her dark curls bouncing in the sunlight. She was flanked on one side by her father, who was happily carrying a massive inflatable unicorn, and on the other by her Aunt Pilar, who had brought a large set of professional children's acrylic paints as a gift.

Lucía stood near the outdoor table, putting the final icing touches on a large strawberry cake. She looked vibrant, healthy, and genuinely happy—a stark contrast to the exhausted, overwhelmed woman who had answered Carmen’s phone calls six months ago.

Carmen sat on a comfortable wooden rocking chair on the shaded porch, watching the scene unfold before her.
