Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Groom's Dark Past

The chaos of flashing police cruiser lights and wailing ambulance sirens painted the night sky in stark reds and blues. Firefighters worked furiously to douse the remaining flames licking at the shattered rear wing of the Whispering Pines Resort, while paramedics tended to dazed, shock-stricken wedding guests on the lawn.
I stood frozen near the perimeter tape, clutching my parents close, my mind spinning out of control. My mother was sobbing uncontrollably into my shoulder, whispering Vanessa’s name over and over again like a broken prayer.
Marcus walked back over to us, flanked by a tall, stern-looking state trooper with silver-streaked hair. The trooper flashed a badge bearing the insignia of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
"Mrs. Hayes?" the agent asked, his voice sharp and authoritative, yet laced with a somber gravity. "I'm Special Agent Miller, FBI Counter-Terrorism Division. Security Director Marcus tells me you were the one who discovered the device under Table 14."
"Yes," I stammered, my voice raspy from inhaling smoke and dust. "My son... my five-year-old son, Noah, noticed it first. He told me to look under the table. If he hadn't... we would all be dead."
Agent Miller’s eyes widened slightly in surprise, looking over toward the tree line where local officers were currently keeping onlookers back. He nodded slowly. "Your son saved a lot of lives tonight, Mrs. Hayes. But we have a much bigger problem. Do you have any idea who Caleb Vance—your sister’s new husband—really is?"
"Caleb? He’s an architect from Boston," my father injected, his voice shaking with grief and disbelief. "They met two years ago at a gala. He treated Vanessa like a queen. What are you talking about?"
Agent Miller motioned for us to follow him toward a command tent set up away from the burning wreckage. Inside, a temporary table was covered in laptops, radios, and a series of printed intelligence files. On one screen, a photograph of Caleb smiling brightly in a tuxedo stared back at us, next to a stark, ominous red file folder stamped CLASSIFIED.
"Architects don't usually have active Interpol red notices linked to international arms smuggling syndicates," Agent Miller said flatly, turning his laptop screen toward us. "Caleb Vance isn't his real name. His birth name is Viktor Petrov. He’s a high-ranking financial operative for a notorious Eastern European syndicate known as the Iron Vow."
The words hit me like a physical blow. The Iron Vow. Suddenly, the handwritten note taped to the bomb echoed in my mind with terrifying clarity: "For Caleb. A vow is a vow."
"The syndicate didn't send that bomb to assassinate random guests," Agent Miller continued, pacing slowly inside the tent. "They sent it because Viktor—'Caleb'—tried to walk away from them. Three weeks ago, he embezzled four million dollars from their offshore accounts, intending to use it to start a clean life with your sister. The syndicate warned him. They told him that breaking his oath to the syndicate meant a death sentence. And tonight, they collected."
"Where is Vanessa?" my mother sobbed, breaking down completely. "Where is my daughter?!"
Agent Miller’s expression softened, though his eyes remained grim. "When the fire alarm went off, Marcus here helped pull people out of the main hall. But the bridal suite, located directly above Table 14 in the rear wing, took the full force of the blast. First responders are searching the rubble right now, but... given the proximity to the detonation point, we must prepare for the worst."
I felt the room spin. My sweet, innocent sister, who had only wanted a fairytale wedding, had fallen victim to a nightmare she never even knew existed. She had married a ghost with a lethal, bloody past.
"And the person who planted the bomb?" I asked, my voice dead and hollow. "Do you know who put it under our table?"

Agent Miller tapped a few keys on his keyboard, bringing up a security camera still image captured from the resort’s kitchen hallway just twenty minutes before the explosion. A man in a catering uniform, wearing a black baseball cap pulled low over his face, was caught on camera walking away from the direction of Table 14, carrying an empty black duffel bag strap.
"We have a facial match," Agent Miller said, zooming in on the grainy photo. "His name is Dominic Cruz. He’s a professional mercenary and Viktor’s former handler in the syndicate. And according to our satellite tracking, he didn't flee the state after the bombing. He’s still in the local area."
