Chapter 8 - The Thirtieth Birthday Celebration

Two days after the court hearing, we finally celebrated the event that had started the entire chaotic chain of events: Michael’s thirtieth birthday.
We decided to keep it intimate. Just the three of us—Michael, Emma, and me—along with a video call projected onto the living room TV connecting us to David, who was currently stationed in Berlin, and a few of Michael’s closest colleagues from the hospital who had stood by him like family through the ordeal.
Our living room was decorated with streamers and balloons, and resting on the kitchen counter was a magnificent chocolate cake that David had pre-ordered and had delivered from our favorite local bakery as a remote surprise.
"Make a wish, Daddy," I whispered, holding Emma in my arms as Michael stood before the glowing candles on the cake, the evening light streaming softly through the living room windows.
Michael looked down at the flickering flames, then up at us—at his beautiful daughter, at me, at the warm, safe home we had built together with our own hands and hearts. He didn't hesitate.
He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and blew the candles out in a single, steady puff.
The room erupted into cheers. On the TV screen, David raised a glass of bourbon and shouted, "Happy birthday, brother!" while Michael’s colleagues clapped and laughed.
"What did you wish for?" I asked later that evening after the guests had gone and Emma had drifted off to peaceful sleep in her crib.
Michael walked over to the nursery door, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin on my shoulder as we looked in at our sleeping daughter.

"I didn't need to wish for anything," Michael murmured softly, pressing a gentle kiss to my cheek. "Everything I ever wanted, everything I fought for, is right here in this room. We survived the storm, Victoria. And our family belongs entirely to us now."
I turned in his arms, wrapping my arms around his neck, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart against mine. The past few months had been a trial by fire, but looking back at the red blinking light of the baby monitor that had saved our lives, I knew one thing for certain: truth always outlasts deception, and true love cannot be broken by anyone—not even a mother's obsession.
