Chapter 6 - The Courtroom Showdown

The Charleston Superior Court was packed to capacity. Word had leaked about the arrest of Charleston’s most prominent pharmaceutical royalty, and flashbulbs blinded the steps as I walked up flanked by Captain Reynolds and Agent Vance.
Inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Evelyn Whitmore sat at the defense table, wearing her handcuffs with the arrogant posture of someone who still believed money could buy gravity. Her lawyer, a smooth-talking shark named Sterling Vance (no relation to Marcus), was arguing animatedly with the judge.
"Your Honor, this entire proceeding is a malicious witch hunt orchestrated by a grieving woman suffering from acute mental breakdown," Sterling declared, gesturing dramatically toward me as I entered the gallery. "There is no credible physical evidence linking my client to any illegal medical tampering!"
Judge Katherine Holloway, a stern woman known for her zero-tolerance policy toward corporate corruption, looked over her glasses at the defense counsel. "Mr. Vance, the state has submitted over four hundred pages of decrypted server logs, hospital IP routing data, and direct audio recordings of your client conspiring to commit medical malpractice and homicide."
"Falsified digital evidence, Your Honor!" Evelyn chimed in, standing up and turning around to face me with a look of pure, unadulterated venom. "She stole our computers! She hacked our home network in a fit of psychotic rage after our babies died naturally!"
The courtroom erupted into whispers.
I didn't flinch. I walked slowly down the aisle, stopping right at the gate separating the gallery from the well of the court. I didn't look at Daniel, who sat hunched and shivering in his orange jumpsuit at the other end of the defense table, refusing to meet my eyes.
Instead, I looked straight into Evelyn’s eyes.
"You called it a natural death, Evelyn," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the silent courtroom without even needing a microphone.
Evelyn sneered. "Because it was, you pathetic little fraud."
I turned to Judge Holloway and held up a certified flash drive. "Your Honor, with the court's permission, I would like to play exhibit Z-9. It is the unedited video recording captured on my person during my children’s funeral service yesterday morning."
Sterling panicked. "Objection! Inadmissible hearsay! Violates wiretapping laws!"
"Overruled, Mr. Vance," Judge Holloway stated firmly. "Play the recording."
A court technician plugged the drive into the master console, and a large overhead screen flickered to life.
The courtroom audio filled the room. The sound of rain against Saint Matthew’s Chapel played softly in the background. Then, Evelyn’s voice rang out clear as day through the high-end speakers:
"God took those babies because He knew what kind of mother you were."
Then came the sound of the slap. The sickening crack of my forehead hitting Noah’s tiny white coffin. And Evelyn’s whispered threat:
"Keep your mouth shut... or you'll end up beside them."
The gallery gasped in horror. Several reporters dropped their pens. Judge Holloway’s face turned glacial, her expression hardening into absolute disgust as she watched Evelyn physically assault a mother at her children's funeral while simultaneously confessing her malice.
On screen, Daniel’s voice echoed: "Claire, stop making a scene."
Evelyn’s face on the courtroom floor drained of all color. Her mouth opened, but no words came out. The invincible matriarch, the queen of Charleston society, was suddenly exposed for the ruthless, vicious monster she truly was.
"Furthermore, Your Honor," I continued, stepping closer to the podium, "as of 4:00 AM this morning, forensic audits confirm that the Whitmore pharmaceutical assets, shell companies, and trust funds have been legally seized and transferred to the Noah and Lily Memorial Trust, pursuant to federal anti-racketeering statutes and civil forfeiture laws."

Evelyn shrieked, lunging forward toward the table. "You stole my empire! You stole everything!"
"No, Evelyn," I said softly, looking down at her with absolute pity. "I just took back what you built on the graves of my children."
