Chapter 9 - Blooming Cherry Blossoms

The wedding was held the following spring in the sunlit courtyard of the Rowan family estate overlooking the Hudson River. It wasn’t a massive, cold corporate affair, but an intimate gathering of the people who mattered most: our closest friends, the Harbor Light medical staff, social workers who had become allies, and a very proud little boy in a miniature tuxedo holding the ring pillow.

As the string quartet played a soft melody, Hazel walked down the flower-strewn aisle as the maid of honor, scattering rose petals with a radiant smile, proudly holding Theo’s hand as the ring bearer.

When I stepped out onto the lawn on my father’s arm, my eyes locked onto Sebastian waiting at the altar. He looked at me with an expression of such fierce, unconditional devotion that all the noise of the world simply melted away.

We exchanged vows beneath a canopy of blooming cherry blossoms—vows not just of romance, but of partnership, resilience, and a shared dedication to healing the broken places in the world. When the officiant pronounced us husband and wife, the applause that erupted was deafening, led enthusiastically by two children who had found their way safely home.

The reception that followed was filled with laughter, dancing, and heartfelt toasts. Priya delivered a brilliantly funny speech about the exact moment she realized Sebastian was a billionaire in disguise, sending the entire crowd into fits of laughter.

Later in the evening, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and violet, I stood by the stone balustrade overlooking the river, feeling the cool evening breeze.

Footsteps approached softly, and a familiar warmth settled around my shoulders as Sebastian draped a light cashmere shawl over me. He stepped up beside me, wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me close.

“Tired?” he asked, resting his chin gently against my hair.

“Never been more energized,” I whispered, leaning my head against his shoulder. “It’s funny to think how different everything would be if Hazel hadn’t decided to share her cookies with Theo that Thursday.”

Sebastian smiled, tightening his embrace. “Some mistakes are actually blessings in disguise. If she hadn't, I never would have walked through your clinic door. I never would have learned what it truly means to care for someone beyond a balance sheet.”

“You saved Harbor Light,” I said softly.

“No, Elena,” Sebastian replied, turning me gently so I was facing him, his eyes shining in the twilight. “Harbor Light saved us.”

We stood there together, watching the river flow toward the open sea, knowing that whatever challenges tomorrow brought, we would face them side by side, anchored by a love that nothing could ever tear down.
