Chapter 8 - The Longest Night

The waiting room on the sixth floor was quiet. Avery sat on the edge of her seat, her fingers intertwined, her eyes locked on the double doors leading to the surgical suite. Lila was asleep on the sofa beside her, wrapped in Ethan's spare trench coat.

When the doors finally swung open and Ethan walked out, still in his blue scrubs, Avery stood up so fast her knees nearly buckled.

Ethan didn't say a word. He just smiled.

A soft, broken cry escaped Avery's lips. She ran to him, and he caught her, lifting her slightly off the floor as he held her tight.

"She's perfect, Avery," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking. "The surgery was a complete success. Her coronary artery is translocated, her valve is repaired, and her heart is beating beautifully on its own. She's in recovery now."

Avery wept into his shoulder, her hands gripping his scrubs as if she would never let go. Three years of fear, running, and loneliness finally dissolved, washed away by the relief of his words.

"Thank you," she whispered. "Thank you, Ethan."

"I didn't do it alone," he said, pulling back slightly to look at her, his hands resting on her waist. "Our daughter is a fighter. Just like her mother."

An hour later, they were allowed into the pediatric recovery room.

Nora was still asleep, but her cheeks were no longer flushed with fever. Her breathing was slow, steady, and deep, assisted by a temporary oxygen mask. The monitor beside her bed beeped in a comforting, regular rhythm.

Avery pulled a chair close to the bed, holding Nora's hand. Ethan sat beside her, his arm wrapped around Avery's shoulders, holding her close. Lila sat on Ethan's lap, her small hand resting on his knee, her stuffed rabbit tucked securely under her arm.

For the first time in three years, they were together. A family, whole and unbroken.

The door opened quietly, and Thomas Miller entered, holding a newspaper and a tablet.

"I apologize for the intrusion," Thomas said softly, "but I thought you should know. The District Attorney has officially issued a warrant for Victoria Cole's arrest. She was taken into custody at her apartment on Fifth Avenue an hour ago."

Ethan did not look up from his daughter’s sleeping face. "The charges?"

"Grand larceny, embezzlement of foundation funds, and multiple counts of identity theft and document forgery," Thomas said. "The Board of Trustees has also suspended Dr. Marcus Vance pending a full investigation into his surgical records and financial ties to your mother."

Avery looked at Ethan. "It's over."

"Yes," Ethan said, turning his head to kiss her temple. "It's over. The foundation will be restructured. We will use the funds to build a proper pediatric research center—one that actually helps families instead of controlling them."

He looked back at Nora, whose eyes were beginning to flutter open.

The little girl blinked against the soft light of the room. She looked at her mother, then at Lila, and finally at Ethan.

She reached out her tiny hand, her fingers touching the sleeve of his blue scrubs.

"Daddy?" she whispered, her voice dry but clear.

Ethan's breath caught. He leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers, his tears falling onto her small hand.

"I'm here, baby," he whispered. "Daddy's here. I'm never leaving you again."
