Chapter 8 - The Six O'Clock Blast

The sterile white lights of the emergency room buzzed softly overhead. Zuri was resting comfortably in a pediatric hospital bed, her small nose wrapped in white gauze, an IV drip gently hydrating her body while an electric blanket kept her warm. She was finally sleeping peacefully, the trauma of the night fading beneath the influence of mild sedatives prescribed by the doctor.

I sat in the plastic chair beside her bed, staring intently at the screen of my phone.

My heart was pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. The digital clock on the lock screen flipped from 5:59 AM to 6:00 AM.

For a moment, nothing happened. The hospital room remained quiet, save for the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor.

Then, my phone buzzed violently in my hand.

An email notification popped up, followed by another, and another, until the screen became a blur of cascading alerts. My phone began vibrating continuously like a trapped insect, lighting up the dark corner of the hospital room with a relentless strobe of blue light.

I unlocked the screen and opened the master archive dashboard.

The automated transmission protocol had executed successfully. Exactly at 6:00 AM, the encrypted dossier containing every piece of evidence I had painstakingly gathered over the past three years had been blasted simultaneously to every major news outlet, federal investigative agency, the State Attorney General’s office, the Internal Revenue Service, and every high-profile financial publication in the country.

Within two minutes, my phone began ringing.

The first call was from an unknown number with a Washington D.C. area code. I ignored it.

The second call came immediately after—an investigative journalist from the city’s largest daily newspaper, whose email address I had specifically targeted.

Then the text messages started flooding in.

“Ms. Holloway, this is Special Agent Vance with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Division. We have received your submission. We need to speak with you immediately.”

“Elena, it’s Sarah from the City Times. We are looking at the offshore accounts and zoning bribe records you uploaded. Is this verified? Can you talk?”

I let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension of years of abuse, fear, and silence finally beginning to melt away from my shoulders.

I stood up quietly, making sure Zuri was still sleeping soundly, and stepped out into the quiet hospital hallway to answer my phone.

“Hello,” I answered steadily.

“Ms. Holloway?” a sharp, authoritative male voice asked on the other end. “This is Special Agent Vance, FBI Financial Crimes Task Force. We are reviewing the documents transmitted from your encrypted node a moment ago. We have bank records, signed wire transfers, and audio recordings implicating Marcus Holloway and Kellen Holloway in a massive multi-million-dollar municipal embezzlement and bribery scheme. Are you the primary source?”

“Yes, I am,” I replied, my voice unwavering. “And I have the physical hard drives containing the original uncompressed files locked in a secure safety deposit box downtown, ready to hand over whenever you need them.”

“Understood,” Agent Vance said, his tone instantly shifting into high gear. “Given the scale of these financial transactions and the political connections involved, we are moving immediately. Warrants are being signed as we speak. Federal marshals are being dispatched to the Holloway residence right now.”

“Good,” I whispered, a cold, vindictive sense of justice washing over me. “Don't let them hide behind their lawyers.”
