Chapter 6 - The Letters Helen Sent
Helen began writing letters several months after the court proceedings. The first letter focused almost entirely on her own suffering. She described neighbors avoiding her, church friends asking questions and the shame of being monitored by authorities. She said she had acted from grief because the necklace belonged to her mother.
She mentioned Mia only twice.
I returned it unopened after reading the first page.
The second letter accused Brittany of manipulation. The third blamed Walter’s temper. The fourth suggested Daniel should have managed the situation before it escalated.
Each letter distributed responsibility while preserving Helen’s image as a wounded grandmother.
I returned them all.
The fifth letter was different.
Rebecca,
I have spent months saying I was manipulated, angry and grieving. Those things may be true, but they do not explain away my choices. I punished Mia because she was the smallest person in the house and could not stop me. I believed authority made me right. I cared more about recovering a necklace than understanding a child.
When Mia cried that she was innocent, I heard her. I chose not to believe her because believing her meant acknowledging that my family was broken.
I know you will never trust me again. I do not expect you to allow me near your daughter. I am writing because I need you to know that Mia was innocent, and I am the person who caused her harm. If she ever asks about me, please tell her that Grandma was wrong, and that her mother was right to protect her.

I read the letter twice.

It was the first sentence Helen had written in six years that contained no defense.
I did not take Mia to see her. I did not invite her into our home. But I kept the letter in a folder with our court documents. One day, when Mia was older, she might want to read it. Not to forgive Helen, but to know that even the woman who had tried to teach her shame had eventually been forced to acknowledge the truth.
