Chapter 6 - Healing at Sunflower Cottage

By the first week of November, Natalie and baby Leo were officially discharged from the hospital. However, returning to the house with the blue door was too painful—the memories of that terrifying morning were still etched into the kitchen walls.
Understanding her need for a fresh start, Mr. Ellis offered Natalie and the children the use of "Sunflower Cottage"—a charming, sun-filled house located on two acres of land at the edge of town, which had belonged to his late sister.
Sunflower Cottage was a dream come true. It featured yellow wooden siding, a white picket fence, and a porch swing that overlooked a sprawling garden filled with ancient oak trees and late-blooming marigolds.
On their first afternoon at the cottage, Rachel, Detective Vance, and Mr. Ellis helped unload boxes of new baby supplies, bright curtains, and toys that the community had gathered for the family.
“Look, Mommy!” Sophie shouted with joy, running across the sprawling grass yard with Barnaby held high. “The swing here isn’t broken! It works!”
Natalie stood on the porch, holding Leo wrapped in a warm fleece blanket. She took a deep breath of the crisp autumn air. For the first time in years, her chest didn’t feel tight. The toxic atmosphere of fear and control that Richard had created had vanished completely.
“It suits you all,” Mr. Ellis said, leaning on his walking stick with a proud, grandfatherly smile. “My sister loved this garden. She always said it was a place where broken spirits come to bloom again.”
“It’s paradise, Mr. Ellis,” Natalie said, wiping a tear of gratitude from her cheek. “I don’t know how we will ever repay you.”
“You already have, my dear,” the old man replied gently. “By letting an old neighbor be part of your family’s rebirth.”
That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant shades of orange and violet, the group gathered around the wooden dining table in Sunflower Cottage. Rachel brought a homemade apple pie, while Detective Vance brought warm roasted chicken.
Sophie sat between Rachel and Vance, eating her dinner with a radiant smile. “Is Detective Vance our uncle now?” she asked innocently.
Everyone laughed, a warm, resonant sound that filled the cozy cottage.

“I’d be honored to be Uncle Vance,” Marcus chuckled, winking at Sophie.
Natalie watched her daughter laugh—a clear, ringing sound that replaced the haunting screams from weeks ago. She looked down at Leo, who was sleeping peacefully in his basket beside the table. She knew there were still legal challenges ahead, but standing in this warm kitchen surrounded by true friends, she knew they had found their sanctuary.
