Chapter 4 - The Bellevue Blueprint

The tension inside the Lake Forest estate reached a boiling point by Friday morning.

Julianne had barricaded herself in the east wing suite with Ruby. She had locked the heavy oak door from the inside and placed an antique armchair beneath the handle. Nurse Gable had knocked three times, demanding entry to check the baby’s vital signs, but Julianne had firmly refused, informing her that any medical visits would take place only in the presence of her personal physician or a court-appointed monitor.

Sitting at the small vanity table, Julianne had her laptop open. She was using a secure, encrypted virtual private network (VPN) routed through her prepaid mobile hotspot.

On her screen were the original 2020 architectural and structural engineering files for the Bellevue Tower—a 52-story luxury high-rise in the heart of the financial district that served as the crown jewel of Holloway & Sons' portfolio.

Six years ago, when Grant was trying to prove himself to his father, he had spearheaded the design and construction of Bellevue Tower. But Grant had made a catastrophic error in the load-bearing calculations for the transfer trusses on the 14th through 18th floors—a mistake caused by his desire to cut costs on structural steel to boost project profit margins.

Julianne, who was then a rising structural engineer and Grant’s fiancée, had discovered the flaw during a routine independent review. When she brought it to Grant’s attention, he had panicked. If Malcolm found out, Grant’s position as heir apparent would have been ruined.

Julianne had spent three sleepless weeks redesigning the truss system, recalculating the stress points, and discreetly altering the municipal sub-floor permit applications to rectify the flaw. She had saved the project—and saved Grant’s career.

Out of love and devotion, she had allowed Grant to sign his name to the revised structural plans. She had accepted a silent background role, eventually stepping down from active practice when they married.

Malcolm and Grant had treated her as a trophy wife—a quiet, compliant accessory to their empire. They had assumed she was weak because she was gentle. They had assumed she was helpless because she loved them.

They had forgotten that she was a master of structural integrity. She knew exactly where the stress cracks were, and she knew precisely how much pressure it would take to bring the whole structure down.

Her phone vibrated on the table. It was Marcus Vance.

"Julianne, it’s done," Marcus said, his voice crisp and victorious. "Grant Holloway was just served at his corporate headquarters forty-five minutes ago."

Julianne took a sharp breath. "What was he served with?"

"A temporary restraining order prohibiting him or his agents from interfering with your physical custody of Ruby, a freeze order on all joint marital assets, and a subpoena for all financial records related to the Holloway Family Trust, including the pre-birth legal communications with Thorne & Sterling."

"How did Thorne react?"

"Thorne called me five minutes after the service, screaming about breach of family privacy," Marcus chuckled darkly. "He had no idea we already filed in court. He thought you were trapped in Lake Forest without legal representation."

"They were planning to commit me, Marcus," Julianne said, her voice steady despite the weight of the memory. "Malcolm threatened to use bought-off doctors to declare me suffering from postpartum psychosis."

"That’s where they made a fatal error," Marcus replied cold. "Because I have already submitted a certified affidavit from Dr. Lena Shah—the chief attending physician at the hospital—confirming that you were completely coherent, emotionally stable, and that the only distress you experienced was caused by Grant’s abandonment in the delivery room. Dr. Shah also documented Grant’s refusal to hold the child and his exact words regarding the baby’s gender."

Julianne felt a wave of profound gratitude for Dr. Shah. The truth was catching up with the lies.

"What’s our next move?" Julianne asked.

"We need to get you out of that house," Marcus said. "I have arranged for a private security detail and a court-appointed transport team to pick you up at 2:00 PM today. Under the temporary order, you have the right to occupy the city townhouse exclusively until the emergency custody hearing on Monday."

"Grant won't let me walk out of here easily," Julianne warned.

"He doesn't have a choice," Marcus said. "If he or his father attempts to physically block you, they will be in direct violation of a court order, and local law enforcement will step in immediately. I’ve already alerted the Lake Forest Police Department."

Julianne ended the call and looked over at Ruby, who was sleeping peacefully in her bassinet, wrapped in a soft pink blanket.

"We're going home baby girl," Julianne whispered.

At 1:45 PM, Julianne packed her bags and strapped Ruby into her infant carrier. She unblocked the door and opened it wide.

Standing in the hallway was Evelyn. Her expression was pale, her hands trembling slightly as she held a rolled-up newspaper.

"Is it true?" Evelyn asked, her voice cracking for the first time. "Did you sue your own husband?"

"I protected my daughter from a family that treats children like financial assets," Julianne replied coldly, lifting the heavy car seat.

"Julianne, you are destroying Grant’s career!" Evelyn cried out, stepping in front of her. "The papers are already catching wind of a dispute! The public offering—"

"The public offering is based on a lie, Evelyn," Julianne cut in, her eyes burning with fierce clarity. "Grant took credit for work he didn't do, and Malcolm built an empire by stepping on anyone who didn't submit to him. You spent forty years taking their abuse and convincing yourself it was 'duty.' I won't spend forty seconds letting them do it to my daughter."

Evelyn flinched as if she had been slapped. She stared at Julianne, her lips quivering, but no words came out. For forty years, Evelyn had swallowed her pride, her dreams, and her self-respect to keep the peace in the Holloway household. Seeing Julianne stand tall and reject the entire toxic legacy shook Evelyn to her very core.

Heavy footsteps echoed up the grand staircase. Malcolm appeared at the top of the stairs, flanked by two large men in suits—his personal security detail.

"You aren't leaving this house with that child, Julianne," Malcolm declared, his voice echoing through the hallway like thunder. "This family does not suffer public embarrassment."

"Step aside, Malcolm," Julianne said, not backing down an inch.

"You think a court paper protects you?" Malcolm sneered. "I own half the judges in this district. You are nothing without this family."

At that exact moment, the heavy oak front doors downstairs burst open.

A crisp, authoritative voice echoed up from the foyer: "Lake Forest Police Department! We have a court-issued protection order for Julianne Holloway and Ruby Holloway!"

Marcus Vance stepped into the foyer right behind two uniformed police officers, flanked by two private security guards.

Malcolm’s face turned purple with rage. He looked down over the banister at the police officers, then back at Julianne.

Julianne looked Malcolm straight in the eye, her posture unyielding.

"You don't own the law, Malcolm," she said quietly. "And you certainly don't own us."

She walked past Malcolm and his security team, down the grand staircase, and straight into the arms of safety.
