Chapter 6 - Christmas Morning and New Beginnings

Christmas morning dawned bright and crisp. Sunlight poured through the frosted windows of the old family estate, illuminating a house that felt fundamentally different from the one we had entered the night before. The heavy, oppressive atmosphere had lifted, replaced by a cautious, nervous quiet.

Elena woke up early, rubbing her eyes and looking around the guest room with cautious curiosity.

"Merry Christmas, sweetheart," I said, handing her a small box wrapped in simple red paper. It wasn't an expensive toy or a flashy gadget; it was a brand-new watercolor set and a thick sketchpad—something she had been asking for quietly for weeks.

Her eyes lit up with genuine, unbridled joy. "For me? Really, Daddy?"

"Really," I smiled, lifting her up. "And guess what? There’s something waiting for you under the tree downstairs. And this time, nobody is going to stop you from enjoying it."

When we walked down the stairs, the living room looked entirely different. Paola and her husband were sitting quietly on the armchairs, looking subdued and humbled. My mother was sitting in the corner, her usual haughty demeanor completely gone; she didn't look at us as we entered, keeping her eyes fixed firmly on the floor.

Under the glowing Christmas tree sat a beautifully wrapped, large box with Elena’s name written in my own handwriting.

"Go ahead, sweetie," I encouraged her.

Elena walked over, her face beaming, and tore open the paper. Inside was a gorgeous, vintage wooden dollhouse—one I had spent the last two weeks restoring in my garage, painting it pink and white just the way she liked.

For the first time in her life, she didn't look over her shoulder to see if she was allowed to be happy. She simply squealed with delight, hugging the dollhouse tight.

Paola cleared her throat awkwardly, standing up and walking over. She held a small, neatly wrapped gift in her hands, her expression genuinely contrite.

"Elena," Paola said softly, kneeling down beside her niece. "I... I wanted to give you this. I’m sorry about last night. I’m sorry for a lot of things. You didn't deserve to be treated that way."

Elena looked up at me, seeking guidance. I nodded encouragingly.

Elena took the gift from her aunt and smiled shyly. "Thank you, Aunt Paola."

It wasn't an instant fix for years of emotional neglect, but it was a beginning. A crack in the ice.
