Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Syndicate

The arrest of Vanessa Miller sent shockwaves through the remaining members of Caleb Carter’s fraudulent real estate syndicate. Within forty-eight hours of her detention at the county detention center, the fragile web of lies, threats, and hidden assets began to disintegrate completely.
Faced with mounting federal charges that carried a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years, Vanessa did what every self-preserving coward does: she decided to cooperate with the prosecution in exchange for a reduced sentence.
Sitting across from the federal prosecutor and her court-appointed defense attorney in a stark interrogation room, Vanessa laid bare the entire operation.
“It wasn’t Caleb’s idea originally,” Vanessa sobbed, dabbing at her mascara-stained cheeks with a crumpled tissue. “It was Marcus. Marcus set up the shell companies while Caleb was still working as a mid-level acquisitions manager. When the federal investigators started sniffing around, they needed a clean property to park liquid assets—somewhere they could draw equity without raising red flags.”
“And that’s why you and Margaret moved into Daniel and Hannah’s house?” the federal prosecutor asked, leaning forward with a pen poised over his legal pad.
“Yes,” Vanessa sniffled. “Margaret came up with the plan to move in under the guise of family crisis. Once inside, our job was to isolate Hannah, wear her down psychologically, and trick her into signing a secondary mortgage or a quitclaim deed transferring her equity to Margaret. Once the deed was in Margaret’s name, Marcus was going to use it as collateral for a commercial bridge loan to bail Caleb out of federal custody.”
“And the oxtail stew?” the prosecutor pressed, his expression hardening. “The physical altercation in the living room?”
“That was supposed to be the final straw,” Vanessa admitted, her voice dropping to a guilty whisper. “Hannah had just come back from the doctor, and she was vulnerable. Margaret was supposed to provoke her into a fight, push her out of the house, and while she was gone, we were going to search her home office for her personal seal and signature stamp on the deed documents. When Hannah refused to cook and stood her ground, Margaret lost her temper and hit her. But when Daniel came home early and caught us... everything fell apart.”
The prosecutor recorded every word. The testimony was clear, corroborated by the burner phone text messages, and airtight.

Meanwhile, Margaret found herself completely abandoned. Stripped of her home, her dignity, and her allies, she attempted to visit Caleb at the federal holding facility, only to be turned away by prison guards who informed her that Caleb had explicitly placed her name on his visitor restriction list—fearing that her desperate attempts to save him would only sink his own plea negotiations further.
Margaret was left living out of a modest extended-stay motel on the outskirts of the city, subsisting on meager savings, utterly alone and consumed by the bitter realization of her own undoing.
