Chapter 8 - Inside Apartment 3B

Stepping into Apartment 3B was like stepping into a different century.

The rooms were cramped, cluttered with stacks of old library books, medicinal equipment, and neatly folded laundry, but everything was spotless. In the corner of the small living room, a pale, frail woman with dark circles under her eyes propped herself up on a faded floral sofa, struggling to pull a knitted blanket over her shoulders.

Carol Garrison looked decades older than her actual years, exhaustion etched into every line of her face.

“Mom, it’s him,” Lily said, tugging on her mother's sleeve with excited urgency. “It’s the man who fell down on Fifth Avenue.”

Carol froze, her eyes widening as she looked from Lily up to the tall, imposing figure of Owen Blake standing in her modest hallway, followed by Marcus Sterling carrying an expensive leather briefcase.

“Mr... Mr. Blake?” Carol gasped, her voice raspy and breathless. She tried to sit up straighter, looking down at her worn clothes with sudden, embarrassed self-consciousness. “I’m so sorry, we didn't expect... I don't know how my daughter—”

“Please, Mrs. Garrison, don't get up,” Owen said quickly, stepping forward with his hand raised in a placating gesture. He stopped a respectful distance away, his expression softened by genuine humility. “Your daughter saved my life. I am the one who should be apologizing for barging in uninvited.”

Carol looked at Owen, then down at Lily, who was standing proudly beside him as if she had just tamed a wild lion.

“Lily told me what happened,” Carol whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears of relief and lingering fear. “She wouldn't stop talking about the man in the blue suit who needed help. I told her she shouldn't wander off, but... she has a very stubborn heart.”

“A stubborn heart is the only kind worth having,” Owen said softly. He signaled to Marcus, who stepped forward and placed the small wrapped box and the manila envelope on the coffee table.

“What is this?” Carol asked, her brow furrowing with cautious suspicion.

“Inside that box is a new educational tablet and a voucher for any private academy in New York City that Lily chooses to attend, fully funded for the next twelve years,” Owen said steadily. “And inside that envelope is the deed to this entire building, along with a certified trust fund established for your medical care and living expenses.”

Carol stared at him, stunned into absolute silence. Her hand trembled as it rested on the blanket.

“Mr. Blake... I can't accept this,” Carol said, her voice shaking with emotion. “We didn't help you for a reward. Lily just did what she thought was right.”

“I know you didn't,” Owen replied gently. “And that’s precisely why you are going to accept it. Because for the first time in my life, I want to invest in something that has genuine value. You raised a remarkable little girl, Mrs. Garrison. The least I can do is make sure the world stops trying to break her family apart.”
