Chapter 10 - The Melody of Forever

The sun dipped low behind the Long Island horizon, painting the sky in strokes of bruised purple, fiery orange, and soft gold. The garden party had quieted down, the helium balloons drifting lazily against the evening breeze, while the faint scent of blooming jasmine hung heavy in the air.
Inside the grand kitchen, Sophia was fast asleep upstairs, tucked into her bed without any machines humming beside her—just a small nightlight shaped like a monarch butterfly glowing softly on her nightstand.
Lorenzo and I sat on the stone bench by the grand fountain in the courtyard. The water bubbled gently, washing away the echoes of gunfire and old blood feuds that had haunted these stones for too long.
“You know,” Lorenzo said, breaking the comfortable silence as he handed me a cup of chamomile tea, “I used to think strength meant building walls high enough that no one could ever hurt you.”
I took the warm mug from his hands, our fingers brushing, sending a pleasant shiver down my spine. “And now?”
“Now I know real strength is opening the doors and letting the right person in,” he smiled, looking at me with a tenderness that made my chest ache in the best possible way.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box. My breath hitched. He popped it open, revealing a delicate silver ring featuring a small, beautifully carved monarch butterfly inlaid with tiny sapphires.
“I didn't buy this from a catalog,” Lorenzo said quietly, his voice thick with emotion. “I designed it with a jeweler in the city. It represents where we started, and where we’re going.”
I stared at the ring, tears spilling over my lashes, not of sadness or fear, but of an overwhelming, profound peace.
“Lorenzo...” I choked out.
“Marry us, Emma,” he said, his dark eyes shining with absolute sincerity. “Be a mother to Sophia, and my partner for the rest of our days. Let’s fill this house with music, laughter, and life.”
I didn't hesitate. I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder as a joyful laugh escaped my lips. “Yes,” I whispered against his skin. “Yes, a million times yes.”
He slid the delicate silver ring onto my finger, pulling me into a deep, tender kiss that tasted like forever.
Later that evening, as the stars began to blanket the night sky, we stood together on the balcony outside Sophia’s bedroom. The nursery door was cracked open, and from inside, we heard a soft, sleepy voice humming a familiar tune.
It was Sophia, singing the ancient Neapolitan lullaby to her favorite stuffed rabbit—the words clear, strong, and full of life.
Lorenzo wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder as we listened to her voice drift out into the quiet night.

“She’s got your voice,” Lorenzo whispered.
“No,” I smiled, leaning back into his embrace as the stars watched over us like guardians of a new dawn. “She has our song.”
