Chapter 7 - A New Foundation at the Estate

Two weeks later, the snow over Fairmont Ridge began to thaw, revealing patches of green grass beneath the heavy winter blanket.

The Whitmore mansion felt entirely different. The oppressive silence that had hung over the twenty-room estate like a shroud for months was gone, replaced by the faint sound of children laughing echoing from the grand foyer.

In the master study, Nathan sat at his mahogany desk. He still used his wheelchair for long distances, but he could now walk short distances with a cane, his strength returning day by day as the toxins completely cleared from his system.

A knock sounded at the open door. Emily walked in carrying a tray with a cup of hot green tea and a stack of mail.

“Dr. Monroe’s medical license was permanently revoked this morning,” Emily said, setting the tray on the desk. “And the state board of health is auditing every private clinic he’s ever consulted for.”

Nathan looked up from his monitor, a warm smile touching the corners of his eyes. “Good. Let’s make sure his former patients get access to proper legal representation. I’ve already instructed our corporate foundation to fund a legal aid initiative for medical fraud.”

Emily paused, leaning against the edge of the desk. “You’re turning your accident into an advocacy campaign.”

“I learned something important during those three months,” Nathan said, spinning his chair around to face her. “A man can have all the wealth in the world, all the advanced medical patents, and all the luxury his money can buy—and still be completely powerless if he doesn't have someone willing to stand up for him when he can’t stand up for himself.”

Emily looked down, a faint blush warming her cheeks. “I was just looking for a roof over my kids’ heads, Mr. Whitmore.”

“Call me Nathan, Emily. Please.” He reached out, gently touching the edge of the blue folder she was holding. “Besides, the carriage house is getting a bit drafty in the early spring winds. Mrs. Bell tells me the third-floor guest suite in the main house has been vacant for years. It has a wonderful view of the gardens.”

Emily looked up, surprise flickering in her eyes. “Are you offering us permanent quarters?”

“I’m offering a contract extension,” Nathan corrected smoothly. “Five years minimum. With full health benefits, a competitive salary, and a college fund established for Leo and Maya.”

Before Emily could answer, the door swung wide open and Maya rushed into the room holding a completed art project, while Leo trailed behind her holding a newly repaired bicycle.

“Mr. Whitmore! Look! I painted the iron gate!” Maya announced proudly, holding up a bright watercolor painting of the mansion’s entrance, complete with spring flowers blooming along the fence.

Nathan looked at the painting, then at Emily, whose eyes were shining with unshed tears of relief and joy.

“It’s beautiful, Maya,” Nathan said softly. “The best artwork this house has seen in decades.”
