Chapter 10 - A New Horizon

A year had passed since that terrifying night in the hospital, and the autumn leaves were once again turning vibrant shades of amber and gold across the quiet neighborhoods of Madison, Wisconsin.
Life had returned to its beautiful, comforting rhythm. The school bus still sighed at the corner every morning like it was tired too, neighbors still waved from their front porches, and the kitchen was once again filled with noise, laughter, and the unmistakable clatter of toys on the floor.
Ethan was ten going on eleven, running around the backyard soccer pitch with more energy than ever before. He was back to building elaborate cardboard spaceships in the garage, asking me impossible questions about quantum mechanics and black holes before bedtime, and living the carefree, joyful childhood he always deserved.
On a crisp Saturday afternoon in October, I sat on the front porch with a warm mug of coffee in my hands, watching Ethan kick his soccer ball against the wooden fence with a bright, ringing laugh.
The front gate creaked open, and the mail carrier dropped a small, plain white envelope into our mailbox before waving and heading down the street.
Curious, I walked down the steps, opened the mailbox, and pulled out the single envelope. There was no return address, just my name written in clean, familiar handwriting that sent a sudden, warm wave of emotion through my chest.
I opened the flap and pulled out a small, folded piece of heavy cardstock. Inside was a single photograph of Lake Mendota at sunrise, glittering with golden light, alongside a short handwritten note:
Sarah,
The world is safe, and so is our boy. Thank you for giving him the future I always dreamed of. Be happy.
— J.
A gentle autumn breeze rustled the maple leaves above the porch, carrying the sweet scent of fallen earth and woodsmoke. A quiet, profound peace settled over my heart.

I looked back out across the lawn where Ethan kicked the soccer ball high into the golden afternoon air, shouting, “Mom, look! I’m flying!”
I smiled, wiped a stray tear of joy from my cheek, and called back, “I see you, buddy! Reach for the stars!”
