Chapter 9 - The Heart That Healed

In the glass-walled solarium overlooking the Atlantic coast, the evening sun was painting the sky in shades of bruised purple and molten gold.

Damian Volkov sat in a comfortable leather recliner, no longer wrapped in heavy blankets. His color had returned, the yellowish pallor of the neurotoxin finally flushed from his system by a new team of independent toxicologists brought in by Victor from Zurich.

Lila sat cross-legged on the carpet beside his chair, showing him how to swipe across the screen of the new tablet with her small index finger.

"Look," Lila signed, pointing at a digital drawing of a yellow sun with crooked rays.

Damian smiled, a genuine, deep smile that reached his eyes and erased a decade of shadows from his face. He took the tablet from her small hands, tapped the screen, and drew a clumsy stick-figure cat beside the sun.

Lila clapped her hands in delight, letting out a bright, ringing laugh that echoed off the glass panels of the solarium.

Mara stood quietly in the doorway, watching them.

Damian looked up, spotting her in the frame of the door. He gently handed the tablet back to Lila, stood up from his chair—without his cane—and walked slowly toward Mara.

"You don't have to stand in the doorway, Mara," Damian said softly, his voice warm and steady.

"I was just checking on her, sir," Mara said, wiping her hands nervously on her apron.

"Drop the 'sir'," Damian said gently. He reached out, his hand—once stained with violence and power, now steady and restored—resting lightly on Mara’s shoulder. "And drop the apron. You’re not a maid anymore, Mara. Not here."

Mara looked up into his slate-grey eyes, seeing no trace of the monster the world feared, only a man who had been given a second chance at life by a four-year-old child.

"Then what are we?" Mara whispered.

Damian looked back toward the solarium where Lila was excitedly trying to show her digital cat to a passing house cat outside the glass.

"Family," Damian said simply. "If you’ll have me."
