Chapter 7 - The Unbroken Thread

We broke every traffic law in the city of Chicago on the drive back to the estate. Surrounded by a convoy of four heavily armed Moretti vehicles, the black SUV cut through the pre-dawn mist like a bullet.
Inside the rear passenger compartment, Elena set up a portable sterile field on the leather seat using medical supplies Marco had brought from the estate's private infirmary.
With incredible, precise skill, her fingers moved over the glass vials. She drew three milliliters of the clear stabilizer from the box retrieved from the conservatory, then carefully measured exactly twelve drops of the blue catalyst from Julian's safe, mixing them into a single syringe.
The liquid reacted instantly, swirling into a soft, glowing violet hue that seemed to hum with vitality.
"The reaction is complete," Elena breathed, holding the syringe up to the light of the passing streetlamps. "This is the complete synthesis. Sofia called it La Resurrezione—The Resurrection."
"Will it hurt him?" I asked, my voice trembling in a way it never had before any gunfight or mafia war.
"The first few minutes will be painful," Elena admitted, looking me dead in the eye. "The serum flushes the cardiac calcification created by the poison. His heart rate will spike, his fever will surge. We have to be strong enough to hold him through it."
When we arrived at the estate, the sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, painting the sky in violent shades of crimson and gold.
We burst through the front doors. Dr. Pierce, who had been kept at the estate under guard, was sitting in the parlor, looking exhausted and hopeless. He stood up as I strode past him, flanked by Elena and Marco.
"Mr. Moretti, where have you been?!" Dr. Pierce demanded, following us down the hall. "Matteo's condition has deteriorated severely over the last two hours! His blood pressure is dropping dangerously low! He doesn't have hours left—he has minutes!"
"Get out of my way, Doctor," I commanded, throwing open the door to Matteo's room.
The little boy was lying in the center of the giant bed, looking impossibly small. His skin was a translucent, ghastly gray, his small chest rising and falling in erratic, shallow gasps. The heart monitor beside his bed was emitting a slow, agonizing beep... beep... beep...
Elena did not hesitate. She walked directly to the bed, unclipped the IV line, and cleared the air from the syringe.
"What are you doing?!" Dr. Pierce yelled, trying to step forward. "You can't just inject unapproved substances into a dying child! That is murder!"
Marco grabbed Dr. Pierce by the collar of his lab coat and dragged him back into the hallway, shutting the door firmly behind them.
"Luca," Elena said, her hands hovering above Matteo's arm. "Hold his shoulders. Do not let him thrash."
I rushed to the bed, dropping to my knees. I wrapped my large, scarred hands gently around my son's tiny shoulders, leaning my face down close to his ear.
"Matteo... daddy is here," I whispered, tears spilling freely down my cheeks now, unbidden and unchecked. "Daddy's here, my brave little lion. Stay with me."
Elena carefully inserted the needle into the IV port and depressed the plunger. The violet liquid flowed into the clear tube and disappeared into Matteo's vein.
For three seconds, nothing happened.
Then, Matteo's entire body went rigid.
A high-pitched gasp tore from his tiny throat. The heart monitor went wild, the numbers spiking from a sluggish forty beats per minute to a roaring one hundred and eighty. His fever broke out instantly, heavy beads of sweat pouring off his forehead as his chest heaved violently.
"Hold him!" Elena shouted, placing her hands on his legs as he began to thrash against the mattress. "Hold him, Luca! The toxins are releasing!"
"Matteo! Look at me!" I cried, burying my face against his hair, smelling the faint, beautiful trace of the red velvet cake. "Listen to daddy's voice! Fight it, Matteo! Fight it for Mommy!"
The boy's eyes snapped open. They were no longer cloudy or dull; they were bright, vivid hazel—Sofia's exact eyes—staring directly into mine with an intensity that shook me to the core.
He let out a long, shuddering scream, his small hands clutching wildly at my shirt, pulling me close.
The heart monitor shrieked a continuous tone as his pulse hit its absolute peak.
And then... total silence.
Matteo's body went completely limp in my arms. His eyes closed. His chest stopped moving.
The heart monitor dropped to a flat line.

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.
"No," I whispered, the world around me shattering into a million sharp, suffocating pieces. "No, no, no! MATTEO!"
