Chapter 4 - The Deposition and the Unraveling Lies

Three days after the incident at the dinner table, the legal machinery moved with terrifying speed. My brother, Judge Michael Harrison, had recused himself from any direct judicial rulings regarding the case to avoid conflict of interest, but his formal petition had successfully transferred the investigation to a Special State Prosecutor's Task Force.

We gathered in a sleek, glass-walled conference room on the ninth floor of the district courthouse for formal depositions. Present were Sarah, Ethan, myself, our family legal counsel, and the lead state prosecutor, a sharp, unyielding woman named Prosecutor Clara Reyes.

Noah was not required to be in the room; he was sitting in a comfortable child-advocacy playroom downstairs with a certified counselor and his favorite drawing supplies.

"Thank you all for coming," Prosecutor Reyes began, laying out several digital tablets and transcribed statements. "Mr. Sterling—Ethan—I need to ask you directly. Your father’s legal defense team, led by attorney Harrison Croft, has filed a preliminary motion claiming that the physical contact between Richard Sterling and your son was an accidental misstep caused by a slippery floor. They claim you and your wife are fabricating an assault charge to gain leverage over family trust assets. What is your response to that statement?"

Ethan took a deep breath. For thirty years, he had lived in constant terror of his father's wrath, constantly bending his will to satisfy a man who viewed kindness as weakness. He reached across the table and took Sarah's hand, squeezing it tightly.

"That statement is a complete lie," Ethan said, his voice firm and unwavering. "My father grabbed Noah with clear intent. He raised his voice, used excessive physical force, and deliberately threw my eight-year-old son across the room. He did it because Noah dropped a piece of silverware. My father has used physical intimidation and financial coercion to control everyone in our family for as long as I can remember. I witnessed it. I failed to stop it in the moment, but I will not lie for him now."

Prosecutor Reyes noted his response with a nod. "And what about your stepmother, Patricia Sterling? How did she react?"

"She encouraged it," Sarah spoke up, her voice clear and precise. "She smiled. She told Noah that he 'needed to learn.' She actively validated the abuse."

"Excellent," Reyes said. "We have the audio recording from Mrs. Evelyn's phone call to Judge Harrison. The background audio clearly captures Mr. Sterling's shouting, the sound of the physical impact, the child's distress, and Mrs. Patricia Sterling's subsequent comments. That audio recording has been forensically authenticated and admitted into evidence."

At that moment, the door to the conference room opened, and Detective Vance stepped inside, holding a fresh stack of financial audit reports.

"We just executed three simultaneous search warrants," Vance announced, taking a seat at the head of the table. "One at Sterling Enterprises Headquarters, one at their private accounting firm, and one at the offshore holdings office in the Cayman Islands."

"What did you find?" I asked.

"More than we initially anticipated, Evelyn," Vance replied. "Your husband’s 2004 notes were the exact roadmap we needed. When we cross-referenced the illegal structural waivers on the Oakridge project with Richard's shell company accounts, we discovered a massive, twenty-year scheme of tax evasion, municipal bribery, and money laundering totaling over forty million dollars."

Ethan looked stunned. "Forty million?"

"He wasn't just running a real estate business," Vance explained. "He was running a systematic financial extortion network. He was paying off building inspectors, safety officials, and local politicians to approve unsafe, cheap construction projects across three counties, then burying the profits in hidden overseas accounts. And Patricia wasn't just a passive bystander. We uncovered evidence showing she was actively managing two of those shell companies under her maiden name."

"So she was an active accomplice," Sarah said.

"Directly," Vance confirmed. "State troopers are taking Patricia into custody right now at her day spa. She is being charged with grand larceny, conspiracy, and money laundering."

The arrogance that had defined the Sterling family for decades was being systematically dismantled, piece by piece. But as the financial crimes were laid bare, the most critical element—the justice for Arthur Pendelton and the protection of Noah—was still entering its most dangerous phase.

That evening, as we returned home, Ethan received a frantic text message from his father's head attorney, requesting an emergency private meeting. Richard had posted a two-million-dollar cash bail under strict house arrest conditions, complete with an electronic ankle monitor, and was desperate to make a deal.
