Chapter 4 - Frame by Frame

On the living room television screen, the digital timestamp in the corner read 3:14 PM—roughly twenty minutes before the party officially started and the guests began arriving.
The kitchen was empty except for Sabrina.
The video feed captured her moving stealthily toward the stainless-steel refrigerator. She opened the door, glanced over her shoulder toward the empty hallway to ensure nobody was watching, and reached deep into the back crisper drawer.
In the living room, Aunt Brenda let out a sharp gasp.
On screen, Sabrina pulled out a small, amber-colored pharmaceutical dropper bottle—the kind typically used for liquid prescription medications. She unscrewed the child-proof cap with practiced ease, holding it between her thumb and forefinger.
Then, she turned toward the large glass beverage dispenser filled with pink lemonade.
With a quick, deliberate motion, she squeezed the rubber bulb of the dropper three full times, releasing a clear, viscous liquid directly into the center of the pink liquid. She didn't hesitate. She didn't look remorseful. She capped the dropper, shoved it back into her designer handbag, and grabbed a long wooden stirring spoon, lazily swirling the lemonade to mix the poison thoroughly before walking away with a self-satisfied smirk.
In the living room, the silence was absolute. You could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator and the heavy, ragged breathing of my mother as she stared up at the screen in sheer disbelief.
“Sabrina...” Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking as she turned to look at her younger daughter. “What... what is that?”
Sabrina’s composure shattered completely. Her face twisted into a mask of pure panic, her mouth opening and closing like a fish stranded on a dock.
“It... it’s not what it looks like!” Sabrina shrieked, her voice echoing shrilly off the hardwood floors. “She edited it! Camille is a tech genius! She used artificial intelligence to fake the video! You know how unstable she is! She’s trying to frame me because she wants sole control of Holloway Industries!”
“AI?” I stepped out from behind the kitchen island, my heels clicking sharply against the floor as I closed the distance between us. “Sabrina, that’s 4K hardware-encrypted footage pulled directly from the local solid-state drive in my basement server rack. There is no cloud upload, no manipulation, and no editing. It is raw, uncompressed forensic evidence.”
Preston tried to step in, attempting to shield his crumbling wife with a final desperate burst of bravado. “This is a civil matter at best! You entrapped her! You set up cameras to spy on family!”
“Spying?” I stopped two feet away from him, my gaze so cold that he actually flinched and took a half-step back. “In my own home? Protecting my family from a premeditated poisoning attempt is not spying, Preston. It’s self-defense.”

Before Preston could formulate another pathetic excuse, the sharp, authoritative knock of local law enforcement echoed loudly through the front door.
“Police department! Open up!”
