Chapter 6 - The Clean Break

The following weeks were a whirlwind of legal filings, moving boxes, and emotional recovery.
With the comprehensive video logs from Lily’s room, the digital forensics extracted from Tyler’s workbench, and Mark’s partial confession, the family court judge granted me sole physical and legal custody of Lily within forty-eight hours. Tyler’s biological mother, Sarah, flew in from Seattle, took one look at the police reports and her ex-husband’s pathetic state, and immediately agreed to enroll Tyler in a specialized adolescent behavioral therapy program in the Pacific Northwest.
Mark was left facing felony child endangerment charges, a massive financial settlement, and a lonely apartment across town where he had plenty of time to contemplate the true cost of his selfishness.
On a crisp Saturday morning three weeks later, our new apartment downtown was finally starting to feel like home.
The space was bright, filled with natural sunlight streaming through large bay windows that overlooked a quiet, tree-lined park. There were no glow-in-the-dark stars peeling off the ceiling here, but Lily and I had spent the afternoon painting her new bedroom a cheerful shade of sunny yellow.
“Mommy, look!” Lily called out, holding up a brand-new stuffed rabbit—this one fluffy, clean, and entirely free of hidden electronics. “Can we put it right here on the middle of the bed?”

“Right there is the absolute best spot for it, sweetie,” I smiled, walking over and kneeling down to hug her tight. She buried her face in my neck, her little body warm and relaxed, completely free of the shadows that had haunted our old house.
For the first time in years, my shoulders didn't carry the weight of a manufactured peace. The silence in our home wasn't the dangerous, ticking silence of secrets and ignored red flags. It was just quiet. It was safe. It was ours.
