Chapter 5 - The Invitation to the Slaughter

The annual Westbridge Community Honors Gala was the premier social event of the year. It was where local politicians, wealthy business owners, and self-important suburbanites gathered under one roof to pat each other on the back, drink expensive wine, and flaunt their success.

This year, Trevor and Marlene had managed to secure a spot for Brock at the head table. The local newspaper had run a glowing profile on Brock, hailing him as the "Hometown Hero" and the presumptive MVP of the upcoming regional hockey tournament.

We received an invitation because my father had bought a block of tickets for the family. Delia initially wanted to stay home.

"Arthur, why would we go?" she asked, looking down at Wren, who was sitting at the kitchen table trying to practice drawing with her left hand. "They’re going to gloat. Marlene will make remarks about Brock’s award. It’ll just tear our hearts out."

"We are going," I said softly, crouching beside Wren and kissing the top of her head. "Trust me, Delia. This is the night the music stops for them."

We arrived late, stepping into the grand ballroom of the Westbridge Country Club just as the dinner service was winding down. The room glittered with crystal chandeliers and expensive silk gowns. Marlene wore a sequined emerald dress that cost more than our monthly grocery bill, and Trevor stood beside her, holding a scotch, laughing loudly with the town mayor.

Brock was in a tailored tuxedo, looking every bit the arrogant star athlete.

When we walked in, a hush fell over our extended family’s table. My mother frowned, and my father stood up, waving us over.

"Arthur! Delia! You finally decided to join society," my father boomed, clapping me on the shoulder. "And you brought Wren. Good, good. It’s time to put all that silliness behind us. Brock is about to be awarded the Youth Athlete of the Year plaque."

"We wouldn't miss it for the world, Dad," I replied, my voice completely devoid of warmth.

We took our seats. Marlene shot us a look of supreme condescension.

"Decided to crawl out of your cave, did you?" Marlene whispered loudly enough for the neighboring tables to hear. "I hope Wren is keeping up with her physical therapy. It’s such a shame she’s so delicate. Sports require thick skin."

Delia opened her mouth to retort, but I placed a steady hand on her arm, silencing her. I looked up at the podium just as the master of ceremonies tapped the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the MC announced smoothly. "Before we move to our keynote presentations, we have a very special recognition tonight. A young man who embodies dedication, sportsmanship, and the fiery competitive spirit of Westbridge... please welcome Brock Henderson to the stage!"

The room erupted into polite, thunderous applause.

Marlene beamed, tears of pride welling in her eyes. Trevor puffed out his chest, catching the eye of every prominent businessman within a thirty-foot radius. Brock swaggered up the steps, fixing his tie with an air of absolute, unearned supremacy.

He reached the podium, shook the mayor's hand, and accepted a heavy glass trophy.

As Brock adjusted the microphone to give his speech, I stood up from my seat.

I didn't yell. I didn't make a scene. Instead, I reached into my jacket pocket, pulled out a small black USB flash drive, and walked calmly down the center aisle toward the audio-visual booth at the back of the room.
