Chapter 10 - The Plate at the Table

We gathered on the back deck for Sunday dinner. The golden autumn sunlight filtered through the changing leaves, casting a warm, amber glow over the wooden table.
There were four plates set out.
Wait—no. I counted again, smiling to myself.
There were five plates.
One for Sarah. One for Lily. One for me. One for my father, who sat comfortably at the end of the table, listening intently as Lily excitedly explained how she scored the winning goal in her soccer match. And one extra plate, set out just in case a neighbor dropped by, or a friend stayed for dinner, or simply because in our house, nobody was ever left out of the feast.
My father looked around the table, taking in the clinking silverware, the genuine laughter, and the complete lack of hidden agendas. He raised his glass of sparkling cider, catching my eye across the table.
There was no ledger between us anymore. No columns of debits and credits, no conditional affection, no silent punishments. There was only the present moment, rich with the flavor of a family rebuilt from the ground up.
"To new foundations," my father said softly, raising his glass higher.
"To new foundations," Sarah and I echoed, clinking our glasses together.

Lily chimed in, raising her cup of apple juice with a radiant grin, "And to lots of tomato plants!"
We all laughed, the sound rising up into the clear autumn air, echoing in a home where love was finally limitless, unconditional, and completely priceless.
