Chapter 10 - Forever After

The penthouse on the fortieth floor of Harrington Tower looked entirely different than it had three years ago.
The cold, sterile minimalism of gray marble and minimalist glass had been replaced with warmth, life, and the undeniable imprint of a real home. Family photographs lined the bookshelves—pictures of Maria laughing in the gardens, Ethan teaching a little girl how to ride a bicycle in Millennium Park, and quiet holiday evenings spent by the crackling fireplace.
It was a quiet Sunday evening. The sun was dipping below the western horizon, painting the Chicago skyline in breathtaking shades of amber, violet, and gold.
Inside the spacious living room, Maria curled up on the plush velvet sofa, sipping a cup of chamomile tea while reading a novel. Across the room, Ethan sat on the carpet with six-year-old Lily, meticulously building a towering castle out of colorful plastic blocks.
"Careful, Your Majesty," Ethan teased, steadying a shaky plastic wall with his index finger. "If this tower falls, the entire kingdom of Mr. Buttons will be in serious trouble."
"It won't fall!" Lily declared with absolute determination, carefully placing a tiny plastic flag on the very top turret. "Because we built it together!"
Ethan looked up from the blocks, his eyes drifting across the room to meet Maria’s warm, loving gaze. He smiled—not the guarded, exhausting grin of a stressed billionaire, but the radiant, peaceful smile of a man who had finally found his true home in the world.
He stood up from the floor, walked over to the sofa, and sat down right beside Maria, pulling her gently against his shoulder. Maria rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong, rhythmic beat of his heart.
A heart that had once struggled to find its next breath, but now beat with a fierce, enduring love that nothing could ever break.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mr. Harrington?" Maria whispered softly, closing her book and looking up at him.
Ethan kissed the top of her head, wrapping his arms securely around both her and the little girl who ran over to climb into their laps.
"I was just thinking," Ethan murmured, a soft smile playing on his lips, "that out of all the billions of dollars I've made, and all the deals I've ever closed... hiring your mother that day was the single greatest investment I ever made."
Lily giggled, holding up Mr. Buttons so the stuffed rabbit could high-five Ethan’s hand.

"The bestest investment ever," Lily agreed happily.
And as the city lights twinkled like a million diamond stars across the Chicago night, the Harrington family sat together in warmth, peace, and endless love, knowing their happily ever after was only just beginning.
