Chapter 8 - The Cleansing

By 1:00 PM, the storm clouds had completely vanished, leaving behind a sky of crisp, clear blue. The air inside the grand estate felt lighter, as if a thick, toxic fog that had been lingering in the hallways for months had finally been swept away by a fresh breeze.

In the grand living room, two workers from a private cleaning service were carefully lifting the heavy Italian leather sofa where Patricia had hidden her necklace. Emiliano stood nearby, watching in silence.

Mateo stepped forward with a pair of white cotton gloves, reached into the gap under the central cushion, and pulled out the broken gold chain. He placed it into a clear plastic evidence bag and handed it to an investigator.

"The police have already added it to the evidence file, sir," Mateo reported quietly. "Along with the audio recordings of her phone calls with Vance. Neither of them will see the outside of a federal prison for at least fifteen years."

Emiliano nodded slowly. "Thank you, Mateo. For everything."

"Just doing my job, sir," Mateo replied with a slight bow. "If I may ask... what are your orders regarding the household staff?"

"Call everyone to the formal dining room immediately," Emiliano said. "It is time to settle the accounts."

Ten minutes later, the entire domestic staff—the cooks, the housekeepers, the gardeners, and the security team—stood assembled in a neat line in the grand dining room. At the end of the line stood Rosa, her hands clasped tightly in front of her white apron, her head slightly bowed, still processing the whirlwind of events that had transpired over the last four hours.

Emiliano walked into the room. He did not sit at the head of the long table. Instead, he stood before his staff as a man stripped of his former hubris.

"I have called you all here to offer a sincere, public apology," Emiliano began, his voice ringing clearly through the room. "For the past several months, a toxic presence existed in this home. Because of my own blindness, my own workaholism, and my foolish trust in a wicked person, every one of you was subjected to unfair treatment, suspicion, and hostility."

The staff members exchanged quiet, surprised glances.

"Effective today," Emiliano continued, "every member of the household staff will receive a fifty percent permanent pay raise. Furthermore, I am establishing a private healthcare and education fund for all your families, fully funded by the Duarte Foundation."

Gasps of surprise echoed through the room. A few housekeepers pulled out handkerchiefs to dab their eyes.

"And now," Emiliano said, turning his gaze directly toward Rosa, "there is one person to whom this family owes everything."

Emiliano walked over to where Rosa stood. To the complete shock of everyone in the room—including Rosa herself—the billionaire businessman, one of the wealthiest men in the country, dropped to one knee before his housekeeper.

"Mr. Duarte!" Rosa gasped, taking an instinctive step back, her hands covering her mouth. "Please... get up!"

"No, Rosa," Emiliano said, looking up at her with profound, unfeigned humility and tears shining in his eyes. "I knelt to a liar and brought a serpent into my home, while ignoring the angel who was shielding my children from the fire. You protected Daniela and Martina when their own father failed them. You risked your livelihood, your reputation, and your mother's health to keep my daughters safe."

He reached out, gently taking her calloused, hard-working hands in his own.

"I can never undo the pain you suffered in this house," Emiliano said softly. "But from this day forward, you will never be treated as a servant in this home again."
