Chapter 7 - The Friday Morning Execution

The mahogany conference room on the fifty-eighth floor had never felt so much like a courtroom.

It was Friday, exactly 8:55 AM.

The air inside was thick with tension. All thirteen board members were present, seated around the large table with severe, predetermined expressions. At the head of the table sat Damian Vale, wearing a custom-tailored charcoal suit and an expression of triumphant, unmasked vindication.

Behind him stood Marcus Vance, holding a thick leather portfolio containing the final proxy signatures and the corporate governance restructuring documents.

Eleanor walked in precisely at 8:59 AM.

She wore a sharp, black pantsuit, her head held high, her posture immaculate. She didn’t look like a defeated executive walking to the gallows; she looked like a queen stepping down from a throne she had chosen to burn herself.

She took her seat at the head of the table—for the last time.

Damian cleared his throat, tapping his gold pen against the mahogany surface.

“Good morning, everyone,” Damian announced, his voice echoing smoothly across the silent room. “We are here for the Extraordinary General Meeting called under Section 9.4 of the corporate bylaws. The agenda is singular: a vote of no confidence in the current Chief Executive Officer, Eleanor Vale, and the immediate restructuring of voting control to protect the financial integrity of Vale Urban Development.”

He turned his gaze toward Eleanor, a thin, smug smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

“Eleanor, before we call the formal proxy vote, do you have any final remarks to share with the board before you step down?”

Every eye in the room turned toward her.

Eleanor slowly stood up. She buttoned her jacket, resting both palms flat on the table, leaning forward slightly as her cold, piercing gaze swept across the faces of the men and women who had traded their souls for a quarterly dividend percentage.

“Yes, Damian,” Eleanor said, her voice crystal clear, ringing through the boardroom with absolute stillness. “I have one final remark.”

She reached into her designer briefcase, pulled out a heavy, sealed manila envelope, and slid it slowly across the polished mahogany toward Damian.

Damian frowned, looking down at the envelope. “What is this? Another emotional plea? Financial audits won't save your seat today, Eleanor. We have sixty-four percent of the voting proxies locked down.”

“It’s not a financial audit,” Eleanor said calmly, straightening her posture. “It is a complete, unredacted federal compliance investigation report compiled by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, alongside forensic accounting records proving that the initial land acquisition bids for Harbor Point five years ago were secured through deliberate zoning fraud, falsified structural hazard reports, and illegal hush-money payments authorized by our former CFO—my late uncle, and your father, Damian.”

The color drained entirely from Damian’s face.

The smug smile vanished as if it had never existed. The gold pen slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the table.

“You’re... you’re lying,” Damian stammered, his voice cracking slightly as he snatched the envelope, tearing it open with trembling fingers. His eyes scanned the first page, his pupils dilating in sheer terror as he read the federal case numbers, the bank routing records, and the signed wire transfer receipts bearing his father’s—and his own—signatures.

“If this report goes to the federal prosecutor’s office,” Eleanor continued, her voice dropping into a deadly, rhythmic cadence, “Vale Urban Development won’t just lose its stock valuation. Every single member of this board who voted to cover up these safety violations will face criminal conspiracy charges, asset seizure, and potential federal prison time.”

Arthur Pendelton gasped, clutching his chest. “Good God...”

May you like

“You wouldn’t,” Damian whispered, looking up at her with naked hatred and pure panic. “You’d destroy the company your own father built? You’d burn the whole empire down just to save a decrepit apartment building by the river?”

“My father built this company on ambition,” Eleanor said, her eyes flashing with ice and fire. “And I am burning it down so something human can finally grow in its place.”
