Chapter 6 - A Cold December Evening

Winter settled over New York with a sharp, biting frost that turned breath into white smoke and coated the park benches in glistening layers of ice. Despite the freezing temperatures, Julian’s presence in Isabel and Mateo’s daily routine had become as natural as the sunrise.

What began as cautious afternoon meetings in the park evolved into shared weekend visits to the Museum of Natural History, hot chocolate at neighborhood cafes, and quiet evenings where Julian helped Mateo assemble complex Lego spaceships on Isabel’s living room rug.

It was a Friday evening in mid-December. Outside, snow flurries danced past the streetlamps, dusting the sidewalks in white. Inside Isabel’s cozy apartment, the smell of cinnamon and roasted chicken filled the air. Mateo was fast asleep on the sofa, exhausted after a long day of school and building snowmen in the courtyard with Rex, who was snoring happily near the radiator.

Isabel stood at the kitchen counter, pouring two cups of chamomile tea, her movements unhurried and relaxed. Julian sat at the small wooden dining table, going over some architectural blueprints for a community library project he was funding in Harlem — a quiet initiative designed to honor Mateo’s neighborhood.

"You're working too late again, Julian," Isabel said softly, setting a mug of tea in front of him before sitting across the table.

Julian looked up, his expression softening as he met her dark eyes. "Not work, Isabel. Just planning. The community board approved the new children's wing for the library today."

Isabel looked at him, a complex mix of emotions playing across her delicate features. For weeks, she had watched Julian dismantle every preconception she had held about him. He wasn't the arrogant, distant corporate titan who had placed his career above their relationship six years ago. He was attentive, patient, and deeply invested in their son's life.

"You've changed so much," she whispered, wrapping her hands around her warm mug. "Sometimes I look at you and wonder where the man I knew went."

"He didn't go anywhere; he just finally woke up," Julian replied, reaching across the table to gently touch her hand. Isabel didn't pull away. Her skin was warm against his, and the touch sent a familiar, electric current through his veins. "Isabel... I know I can't undo the past six years. I know I missed out on his first steps, his first words, all of it. But I want the future. All of it. With both of you."

Isabel lowered her gaze, a soft sigh escaping her lips. "I was so afraid of getting hurt again, Julian. When I left you, I thought I was protecting myself and my unborn child from a life of cold boardrooms and empty promises. But watching you with Mateo... watching how he looks at you when you teach him how to skip stones... I realize I've kept a wall up that needed to come down."

Julian stood up from his chair, walked around the small table, and knelt beside her chair, looking up into her eyes with a raw, unfiltered sincerity that left no room for doubt.

"Let me be the man you deserved all along," Julian said quietly. "Marry me, Isabel. Let's make this family whole."

Before Isabel could answer, the front door clicked open, and a cold gust of wind swept into the entryway.
