Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of Samuel Fletcher

The ballroom was dead silent. Even the rain outside seemed to quiet down as Julian’s words echoed off the high mahogany beams.
Mr. David Chen leaned back in his chair, his sharp eyes fixed on Julian. "Go on, Mr. Vance."
Julian walked back toward the Board table, pulling a thick leather folder from under his arm and slamming it onto the table in front of Samuel Fletcher.
"You speak of fiduciary duty, Samuel," Julian said, his eyes cold and sharp as flint. "While you were busy monitoring who drank water in the lobby and spying outside my suite door, my private audit team spent the last two hours reviewing the resort's operational accounts."
Samuel’s face drained of color. "What... what are you talking about?"
Julian opened the folder, flipping through pages of financial records.
"For the past four years, Samuel, you have been inflating maintenance costs for the West Wing, submitting fake invoices for luxury linen replacements, and pocketing over four hundred thousand dollars through a shell vendor account registered in the Cayman Islands under your wife's maiden name."
Samuel stumbled back two steps, his eyes widening in total terror. "That's... that's a lie! That's fabrication!"
"The paper trail is complete," Julian said calmly, handing a copy directly to Mr. Chen and the Chairman of the Board. "Including the electronic signatures you used to transfer funds just three days ago. You were so desperate to see me ousted today because you knew that once the buyout deal went through, Mr. Chen’s forensic accountants would discover your embezzlement within forty-eight hours."
The Chairman of the Board looked at the documents, his face turning dark with rage. "Samuel Fletcher, is this true?"
Samuel couldn't speak. Sweat was pouring down his forehead, running into his silver mustache. He looked frantically around the room, but the two security guards who had previously backed him took a step away from him, folding their arms.
"Samuel Fletcher," the Chairman declared coldly, "you are terminated immediately. Security, remove Mr. Fletcher from the property and hold him in the security office until the Monterey Sheriff's department arrives to arrest him for grand larceny and fraud."
The two security guards immediately stepped forward, grabbing Samuel by his arms. Samuel struggled violently, his polished persona entirely shattered.
"You can't do this to me!" Samuel screamed as he was hauled backward out of the ballroom. "I built this resort! You're choosing a maid and a gutter-bum over me! Julian, you'll regret this! You'll regret this!"
The heavy double doors closed behind Samuel's screams, leaving an eerie silence in the ballroom.
Julian stood before the Board and Mr. Chen. "My offer to the Board is simple," Julian said quietly. "If you believe my personal history or my desire to run this resort with basic human compassion renders me unfit to be CEO, I will resign today. I will sell my equity stake and walk away."
Mr. Chen stood up slowly. He walked down from the elevated board table, stepping over to where Arthur and Sarah were sitting. He looked down at Arthur, seeing the aged, worn hands, and then looked at Sarah, who was holding her daughter close.
Mr. Chen turned to face Julian.
"Mr. Vance," Mr. Chen said, a soft, rare smile appearing on his stern face. "In my forty years of global hospitality business, I have built hundreds of hotels. I can buy marble, I can buy silver chandeliers, and I can hire world-class chefs. But I cannot buy genuine heart, integrity, or leadership."
Mr. Chen reached out his hand to Julian.
"My syndicate does not want to invest in a cold museum for the rich, Mr. Vance. We want to invest in you. On one condition."
Julian shook Mr. Chen's hand. "What condition?"
"That you create a new corporate policy for all hotels under our brand," Mr. Chen said warmly. "A full healthcare coverage plan for every employee—including junior housekeeping staff—with zero deductible for pediatric care. And that Miss Harrison be appointed as our corporate Director of Staff Welfare and Guest Hospitality Ethics."
Sarah’s eyes widened in utter disbelief. "Me? Director?"
"You showed more true hospitality in five minutes with a glass of water," Mr. Chen said, bowing respectfully to Sarah, "than this resort showed all morning. You deserve to lead."

Tears sprang to Sarah’s eyes as she hugged Chloe tightly. Chloe giggled, rubbing her cheek against her mother's shoulder.
Julian looked at Sarah, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his face for the first time in fifteen years. Then, he turned to his father.
