PART 2: The Boy Who Never Stopped Waiting

Marcus stood frozen in the doorway.

Caleb's fingers tightened around the pencil until it snapped in half.

For several endless seconds, neither father nor son moved.

Then Caleb whispered the words Marcus had dreamed of hearing for an entire year.

"Dad?"

Marcus nodded, unable to trust his voice.

"I'm here, buddy."

Caleb slowly stood from the desk, but instead of running forward, he took one cautious step back.

"They said you didn't want me anymore."

Every person in the hallway fell silent.

Marcus felt his heart shatter.

He knelt until he was at eye level.

"Look at me."

Caleb hesitated before lifting his eyes.

"I searched for you every single day. I talked to your grave because I believed you were gone. I never stopped loving you. Never."

Caleb's lips trembled.

"But Aunt Victoria said you chose your company over me. She said I was sick and expensive and... and that you said it was easier if I disappeared."

Marcus closed his eyes.

His own sister.

The woman he had trusted with everything while he traveled overseas.

Diane quietly placed a hand on Rosie's shoulder and led everyone into the kitchen, leaving father and son alone.

Marcus pulled a small leather wallet from his pocket.

Inside was a faded picture of Caleb at age five, missing his front tooth.

"I've carried this every day."

Then he reached into his coat and removed the tiny silver compass Caleb had given him before his business trip.

"You told me heroes always find their way home."

Caleb stared at it.

"You kept it?"

"I never lost it."

The wall around the little boy cracked.

He crossed the room in three uncertain steps before throwing himself into Marcus's arms.

Marcus held him so tightly that it felt as though the entire world had finally stopped falling apart.

"I'm sorry," Marcus whispered.

"You came back," Caleb cried into his shoulder.

Outside the bedroom window, Rosie smiled.

Her grandfather quietly wiped away tears.

For the first time in twelve months, the house sounded like hope instead of silence.

The reunion quickly became something much bigger.

Marcus hired the best investigators in the country.

Within forty-eight hours, they uncovered a terrifying truth.

Victoria and her husband had secretly gained temporary guardianship while Marcus was overseas.

Knowing Caleb's inheritance was worth hundreds of millions, they convinced doctors that the boy needed "private treatment."

When Caleb escaped the isolated recovery facility during a snowstorm, they realized losing him would expose everything.

So they forged medical records, arranged a sealed funeral, and buried an empty coffin while telling Marcus his son had died from complications.

The entire scheme had one purpose:

Control Caleb's trust fund until adulthood.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Bank transfers.

Forged signatures.

Fake hospital documents.

Recorded phone calls.

Victoria was arrested without saying a word.

As police led her away, she looked once toward Marcus.

He simply turned his back.

His attention belonged somewhere else.

To the little boy sitting beside Rosie on the courthouse steps, sharing a chocolate muffin and laughing over a stray pigeon that kept stealing crumbs.
