Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Romano Empire

In less than three seconds, the festive atmosphere of the grand Westchester mansion transformed into an active war zone.
Before Salvatore Romano’s bodyguards could even clear their jackets, four Duca enforcers materialized from the shadows of the marble pillars, their weapons drawn and leveled with terrifying precision. The elite politicians, judges, and venture capitalists scattered in sheer panic, diving behind heavy velvet drapes, overturning antique chairs, and stampeding toward the main foyer like frightened cattle.
"Hold your fire!" Salvatore bellowed, his face turning a deep, dangerous shade of crimson. He raised his hands, though his eyes burned with lethal fury as he stared at Lorenzo. "Duca, you are declaring war! The Romano family will tear this estate down to the foundations before the sun rises!"
"You won't have a family left to fight for, Salvatore," Lorenzo replied, his voice cold and flat.
He pulled a sleek, encrypted satellite phone from his pocket with his left hand, tapping the screen twice before holding it up.
"While you were busy planning a wedding and a hostile corporate takeover of my syndicates, my teams were busy executing a synchronized sweep of every port, warehouse, and shell corporation controlled by the Romano family across New Jersey and Manhattan," Lorenzo continued, his words landing like heavy hammer blows. "As of three minutes ago, your shipping hubs in Newark are under Duca control. Your financial accounts in Zurich have been frozen by our cyber division. And federal investigators—the ones you thought you had bribed last month—have just received an anonymous, fully documented package detailing every tax evasion, money laundering, and drug trafficking operation bearing your signature."
Salvatore’s jaw slackened. The fierce, untouchable patriarch of northern New Jersey suddenly looked every bit of his seventy years. The empire he had spent four decades building was evaporating in real-time, dismantled not by a rival syndicate's war, but by the sheer, terrifying efficiency of a man who had finally woken up.
"You... you planned this," Salvatore breathed, his voice trembling with disbelief.
"I gave you the benefit of the doubt until tonight," Lorenzo said quietly. "That was my only mistake."
Serena let out a sharp, hysterical cry, sliding down the mahogany table until she was sitting on the polished hardwood floor, her expensive red silk gown pooling around her like spilled blood. Her elaborate hairstyle was coming undone, strands of dark hair clinging to her damp forehead.
"You can't do this!" she screamed, lunging forward to grab the hem of Lorenzo’s trousers. "I loved you! I gave three years of my life to this house, to you, to the legacy!"
Lorenzo looked down at her, his expression entirely devoid of pity.
"You loved the power, Serena," Lorenzo corrected softly. "You loved the idea of sitting at the head of the table. But a kingdom built on poison doesn't survive the morning."
He signaled to Frankie Marino. "Take her and her father to the lower estate. Secure them until federal custody arrives. Make sure they have plenty of time to discuss the future."
"With pleasure, boss," Frankie grinned, motioning for the enforcers to step forward.
As Salvatore and a kicking, screaming Serena were escorted out through the service doors by four armed guards, the grand ballroom grew eerily quiet once more. The shattered crystal on the floor glittered under the chandeliers, and the scent of expensive perfume hung heavy in the air, mixing with the lingering tension of a shattered dynasty.
Lorenzo stood alone in the center of the room.

For the first time in months, the high-pitched ringing in his ears was entirely gone. The silence that remained was not a prison—it was a blank canvas.
He turned toward the service alcove where Martha and little Lulu were still standing, watching him with wide, uncertain eyes.
