Chapter 10 - The Brightest Dawn

Three years to the day after the darkest night of his life, Evan Mercer stood on the balcony of his Greenwich estate, looking out over the sprawling green lawn.

The rain had stopped, leaving behind a crisp, clear autumn morning. The sky was a brilliant expanse of sapphire blue, dotted with a few fading stars that seemed to blink in cheerful greeting.

Inside the bedroom, the heavy velvet curtains were wide open, flooding the room with golden morning sunlight.

Evan heard the patter of small feet against the hardwood floor.

A moment later, Lucy bounced onto the balcony wearing dinosaur pajamas that were slightly too short for her legs, holding her one-eared stuffed rabbit under one arm and a plate stacked high with maple-syrup-drenched pancakes in the other.

"Dad! Mom says breakfast is ready, but you're standing out here looking at the sky like a giant bear," Lucy announced, handing him a plastic fork.

Evan smiled, taking the plate from her small hands. He knelt down so he was eye-level with her.

"Just checking on the stars, Captain," Evan said, his voice rich with contentment. "Making sure our favorite firefly is paying attention."

Lucy nodded wisely, patting his arm. "She's watching. And she's definitely eating pancakes in heaven."

Nora stepped out onto the balcony, wrapped in a cozy knit sweater, holding two steaming mugs of coffee. She handed one to Evan, leaning against his shoulder as they looked out over the horizon together.

The ghosts of the past were gone, replaced by the warm, grounding reality of a family made of love, resilience, and maple syrup. Evan took a bite of the pancake, wrapped his arm securely around Nora’s waist, and pulled Lucy close against his side.

For the first time in his life, Evan Mercer knew with absolute certainty that the dark was nothing to fear. The dawn had finally come, and it was brighter than he ever could have imagined.
