Part 2: The Man Who Came Through the Storm

The first time Lena Carter met Adrian Voss, she thought he was simply a wealthy customer.
The second time, she realized she had been wrong.
Her shaking fingers dialed the number on the cream-colored card.
The bathroom door shuddered under another impact.
"Lena!" Ryan roared. "Open this door!"
She pressed the phone to her ear.
One ring.
Two.
Then a calm voice answered.
"Adrian Voss."
For a moment, she could not speak.
The silence stretched.
Then she whispered, "I think... I think I'm finally using the card."
The line went completely quiet.
Not disconnected.
Quiet.
As if the person on the other end suddenly understood everything.
"Lena?" he asked.
Her throat tightened.
"Yes."
Another crash hit the bathroom door.
Ryan was trying to break through.
Adrian's voice changed instantly.
"Are you alone?"
"No."
"Is he there?"
"Yes."
The answer barely left her mouth before the door frame groaned.
"He says he's going to kill me."
A pause.
Then Adrian spoke with frightening certainty.
"Listen carefully. Stay where you are. Lock the door if it isn't already locked."
"It is."
"Good. Put your phone on speaker and keep talking to me."
She heard movement on his end.
Doors.
Voices.
An engine.
No questions.
No hesitation.
Just action.
"How long?" she whispered.
"I'm already on my way."
The bathroom door cracked.
Wood splintered.
Ryan laughed from the other side.
"You think a door is going to save you?"
Lena squeezed her eyes shut.
Minutes passed like hours.
Then suddenly she heard something else.
Not inside the house.
Outside.
Vehicles.
More than one.
Headlights flashed through the tiny bathroom window.
Ryan stopped pounding.
Silence filled the hallway.
A few seconds later came a hard knock on the front door.
Three sharp strikes.
Not the knock of a neighbor.
Not the knock of a police officer.
The knock of someone who expected the door to open.
Ryan's footsteps moved away from the bathroom.
"What the hell?"
Lena heard the front door open.
Then she heard Ryan's voice.
"What do you want?"
The answer was calm.
"Step outside."
"Who are you?"
A pause.
Then the same voice from the phone.
"Adrian Voss."
Everything went silent.
Even Ryan.
Lena did not understand why.
But Ryan clearly did.
For the first time in five years, she heard fear in her husband's voice.
A different kind of fear.
The kind predators feel when they realize they are no longer the biggest threat in the room.
"What is this?" Ryan asked.
"No games," Adrian said. "Step outside."
The next few minutes happened quickly.
Very quickly.
Police entered the house.
Paramedics followed.
Someone gently opened the bathroom door.
A woman in uniform knelt beside Lena.
"You're safe now."
Safe.
The word felt unfamiliar.
Like a language she had forgotten.
As they carried her outside, she saw Adrian standing in the rain.
Tall.
Dark coat.
Motionless.
He looked exactly as he had three years earlier.
Except now she understood why people moved when he spoke.
Ryan stood handcuffed beside a patrol car.
Their eyes met.
For years Lena had seen confidence, cruelty, and control in her husband's face.
Tonight she saw panic.
May you like
And for the first time, she looked away first because she chose to.
Not because she was afraid.
