Chapter 9 - A New Foundation

Sophia stood in the doorway of the third-floor study, holding a tray with a fresh pot of coffee and two porcelain cups. She was wearing her usual blue cotton dress, her hair neatly pinned back, but her shoulders were no longer curved under the invisible weight of three years of silent grief.
She set the tray down on the desk with a steady, practiced grace.
"The cook is making pancakes downstairs," Sophia said, her voice warm and even. "Emma is currently trying to feed her calico cat a piece of banana in the kitchen."
Lorenzo crossed the room, stopping two feet away from her—the exact same distance he had stood three years ago when she first walked through the front doors carrying an infant wrapped in a curtain.
"Sophia," Lorenzo said, his voice softer than she had ever heard it. "The estate needs a new head housekeeper. Someone who knows every stone, every hallway, and every secret this house holds. Someone who isn't afraid of iron pokers or dark basements."
Sophia looked up into his pale, steady eyes. She didn't count to three this time. She didn't need to.
"Does the position come with health insurance for my daughter?" she asked, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of her mouth.
"It comes with the entire estate, Sophia," Lorenzo replied, unbuttoning his right glove slowly, deliberately, and letting the black leather drop to the floor. He extended his bare hand toward her—the pale skin, the thin white scar along the base of the thumb completely visible in the morning light.
Sophia reached out and placed her warm, calloused hand firmly in his.

"Then I accept," she said.
Down in the courtyard, past the newly repaired stone fountain where water was finally splashing over the basin once more, a three-year-old girl in yellow-duck pajamas laughed out loud as her cat chased a falling autumn leaf across the gravel, perfectly safe in a world that had finally stopped bleeding.
