Chapter 10 - A Garden for Mara

One Year Later
The sun shone brightly over the rolling green hills of a quiet valley in Maryland.
The new headstone was simple, carved from warm pink granite that caught the morning light. It sat beneath the wide branches of an ancient cherry tree, surrounded by a vibrant garden of yellow wildflowers—the same color as the cardigan Mara had loved to wear.

Caleb stood before the grave, his hand resting on the warm stone. He was nineteen now, taller, his shoulders broader, the shadow of fear completely gone from his eyes. Beside him stood Evelyn, her face bright and full of life, her hand tucked into the crook of his arm.
They had spent the last year building the Mara Mercer Foundation. It had already helped dozens of women and children escape abusive homes, providing them with legal aid, safe housing, and a chance to rebuild their lives in safety.
Caleb reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, blue rubber elephant.
He had kept it all these years—the last thing his mother had ever given him, the toy he had been holding when the world went dark.
He knelt down and placed the toy gently at the base of the headstone, nestled among the yellow flowers.
"We did it, Mom," Caleb whispered. "You're safe now. And so am I."

A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the cherry tree, sending a shower of soft pink petals drifting down over the grave, like a quiet blessing in the afternoon sun.
Caleb stood up, taking Evelyn’s hand. They turned away from the grave and walked down the hill together, leaving the shadows of the past behind them, walking forward into a bright, beautiful, and unbroken future.
