Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Web

The morning brought little comfort, replacing the chaotic trauma of the night with the cold, administrative reality of the legal system. By 9:00 AM, Daniel had secured a temporary restraining order through an emergency petition, while Detective Marcus Vance—no relation to Daniel—arrived at the hospital to take additional formal statements.

"Your mother is currently being held at the central precinct," Detective Vance explained, pulling out a small black notebook as he sat in the corner of Emily's room. "Because of the nature of the allegations involving a minor and physical assault, bail hasn't been set yet. However, I need to be completely transparent with you both: Margaret is telling a very different story."

Emily shifted uncomfortably on the bed, wincing slightly as the movement disturbed her bruised jaw. "What is she saying?"

"She claims that you, Emily, suffered a post-partum psychotic episode," the detective said plainly. "She claims she rushed over because she was concerned for the baby, that you lunged at her, tripped over the rug, fell into the crib, and injured yourself. She claims she was simply trying to rescue Sophie from your arms when the bruising occurred."

Daniel felt a hot burst of rage ignite in his chest. "That's a complete lie! I was there! I saw my mother standing over Emily, and I saw her shove Emily away!"

"I believe you, Mr. Vance," Detective Vance said smoothly, raising a hand to calm him down. "Physicians' reports also lean heavily toward your version of events, given the angles of the impact bruises on Mrs. Vance. But in court, it becomes a matter of word-against-word unless we have concrete corroboration. Do you have any previous records of domestic disputes? Messages? Home security cameras?"

Daniel froze. His jaw tightened as a sudden recollection struck him. "The nursery..."

Emily looked at him, confused. "What about the nursery?"

"Two months ago, when you were still pregnant, I bought that smart air purifier for Sophie’s room," Daniel said, his eyes widening as the memory crystallized. "It came with a integrated ambient monitor and a security camera that syncs to my cloud account. I completely forgot about it because we turned off the motion notifications when we moved the crib!"

Detective Vance leaned forward, his eyes sharp. "Was it recording last night?"

Daniel pulled out his phone with trembling hands. His fingers flew across the screen, tapping into the home automation application. He navigated past the main dashboard, opened the security archive, and selected the folder timestamped for 11:15 PM the previous evening.

He clicked play and handed the phone directly to Detective Vance.

The small screen played out the horrific reality in crisp 1080p high definition.

The video clearly showed Emily standing near the crib, holding Sophie gently. Margaret entered the frame abruptly, her facial expression twisted in anger. The audio was shockingly clear.

"You think you've won, don't you?" Margaret's recorded voice hissed from the phone's small speakers. "You think because you had his baby, you own him now? You’re nothing, Emily. A pathetic, penniless little girl who dragged my son down."

"Margaret, please leave, you're scaring the baby," Emily’s voice trembled on the track.

"Give me that child! You don't deserve her!"

The footage showed Margaret grabbing Emily’s arm roughly, pulling Sophie toward her. Emily turned her body to shield the newborn, and Margaret deliberately gave Emily a hard, furious shove. Emily’s head clipped the edge of the heavy wooden crib before she crashed violently onto the hard floor. The camera then captured Margaret grabbing tiny Sophie’s arm roughly, trying to yank her away, right before Daniel burst into the room.

The detective let out a low, slow breath as the video finished. He paused the footage, locked the phone screen, and looked up at Daniel and Emily with a grave expression.

"This changes everything," Detective Vance said quietly. "This isn't just a domestic dispute anymore. This is clear evidence of felony child abuse, assault with severe bodily harm, and premeditated malice. I will have this file transferred to the District Attorney's office immediately."

Emily let out a shaky sigh, burying her face in her hands as tears began to spill down her fingers. The overwhelming validation—the terrifying proof that she wasn't crazy, that she hadn't imagined the sheer malice in Margaret’s eyes—flooded through her like a tidal wave.

"It's over, Em," Daniel whispered, moving to embrace her tightly, careful not to press against her injuries. "She can't twist this around anymore. Everyone is going to see her for exactly who she is."

Later that afternoon, the police released Emily and baby Sophie, confirming that both were stable enough to return home. Daniel drove them back to their house, but as he pulled into the driveway, the sight of the front porch made his stomach turn. Margaret’s car was gone, but her shadow seemed to hang over every inch of the property.

Daniel carried Sophie in her car seat while supporting Emily with his free arm. They walked inside and locked the door behind them. The house was quiet, almost eerily so. Daniel immediately set to work. He spent the next three hours changing every deadbolt on every exterior door, updating security passcodes, and setting up additional cameras in every room of the house.

While Daniel worked on the locks, Emily sat on the living room sofa, holding Sophie close to her chest. Her cell phone vibrated on the coffee table. She glanced down at the screen and felt her heart plunge into her throat.

It was a voicemail notification from an unknown number.

With a trembling hand, she pressed play and put the phone to her ear.

"Emily," Margaret’s voice sounded muffled, coming from what sounded like a payphone or a lawyer's office. The venom in her tone was undisguised, cold and razor-sharp. "You think you've stripped my son away from me, but you don't know anything about the sacrifices I made to keep him. If you take him from me, I will burn down everything he has built. I will ruin both of you before I let you have my family. Tell Daniel his mother is far from finished."

Emily dropped the phone onto the rug, her breathing turning shallow.

Daniel rushed into the living room, having heard the phone drop. "Emily? What's wrong?"

"She called," Emily whispered, looking up at him with wide, terrified eyes. "Daniel... she isn't going to stop. Even with the police, she isn't going to stop."

Daniel picked up the phone, listened to the recording, and his jaw set in an iron line. He didn't scream, and he didn't throw anything. Instead, a terrifyingly clear calmness washed over him.

"She thinks she built me," Daniel said softly, staring at the darkened screen of the phone. "She thinks she controls my life, my career, and my future. But she forgot one tiny detail." He looked up at Emily with eyes full of unwavering strength. "I know all her secrets, too."
