Chapter 7 - The Battle for the Harbor

By midnight, the storm had reached its peak, pounding the Boston coastline with gale-force winds and torrential rain.
The estate had been transformed into an iron fortress. Two federal marshals, dispatched personally by the state attorney general after Clara transmitted a portion of the encrypted files from Titan’s drive, were stationed in the main security office, securing Marcus in hand-cuffs while taking his sworn confession.
In the medical bay downstairs, Clara was carefully dressing the graze wound on Titan’s shoulder. Lily sat on the stool beside her, holding a flashlight so Clara could see, her small hand constantly resting on Titan’s massive head.
"He's going to be fine," Clara signed to Lily, using the basic hand signals Lily had taught her over the past few hours. "Strong dog. Brave."
Lily smiled—a real, bright smile that lit up her pale face—and signed back: He is my brother now.
Clara felt a lump form in her throat. She looked up as Damien stepped into the room. He had changed into dry clothes—a heavy tactical turtleneck and dark trousers. He looked older, the lines around his eyes deeper, but the cold rage that had consumed him for four years had been replaced by a sharp, quiet clarity.
"The federal team is arriving at dawn to secure the drive and transport Marcus," Damien said to Clara. "You'll be placed under full federal protection. Your father’s work will be restored."
"And what about you, Damien?" Clara asked, setting down her bandage scissors. "When the feds take that drive, your own empire is going to come under investigation."
Damien looked at his daughter, who was gently patting Titan’s nose.
"I don't care about the empire," Damien said softly. "I built it to protect her. And all it did was bring death to our doorstep. Once the Valentis are dealt with, Cross Enterprises is finished. I'm shutting it all down."
Before Clara could answer, the red emergency lights in the medical bay began to flash silently.
The secondary alarm had been triggered.
Damien pulled his tactical radio from his belt. "Report."
Static crackled over the speaker, followed by the sound of gunfire and heavy engine roars. "BOSS! IT'S THE VALENTIS! THEY BROKE THROUGH THE NORTH GATE! THREE ARMORED TRUCKS! THEY'VE CUT THE MAIN POWER!"
The lights in the house went pitch black.
The emergency generators kicked in two seconds later, casting a dull, amber glow down the long subterranean corridors.
"They aren't here to negotiate," Damien said calmly, pulling a tactical shotgun from the wall cabinet. "They know the drive is here. They're going to burn this house to the ground to destroy the evidence."
He looked at Clara. "Take Lily and Titan to the safe room beneath the wine cellar. It’s reinforced steel with an independent air supply. Stay there until the state police arrive."
"Damien, no!" Clara said, taking his arm. "They have heavy weapons!"
"I know," Damien said, looking down at Lily. He knelt down in front of his daughter, bringing his face level with hers. He didn't try to speak. He raised his hands and made three clear, precise signs—signals he had spent the last two days secretly practicing from Lily’s books:
I love you.
Stay safe.
I will come back.
Lily looked at her father. Tears filled her dark eyes, but she nodded slowly. She reached out and touched his cheek, her thumb tracing the old scar along his jawline.
Damien stood up, his face hardening into stone. He turned to Titan.
"Guard them," Damien commanded, pointing toward the heavy steel door of the safe room.
May you like
Titan let out a low, vibrating huff. He stepped in front of Lily and Clara, his broad body acting as a living shield as he guided them toward the reinforced door.
Damien racking a shell into his shotgun, stepped out into the dark hallway to face the final storm.
