Part 5

The chaos at the top of the stairwell erupted in a flurry of shouted commands and the heavy thud of tactical boots hitting the concrete floor.

Gordon Pike made a desperate lunge toward the desk, his hand reaching for a heavy steel panic button mounted beneath the laminate surface.

"Don't move!" Sarah screamed, lunging forward and tackling him around the waist just as his finger brushed the red plastic button.

The two of them crashed hard onto the concrete floor, sending papers and ledgers scattering across the room. Gordon struggled with surprising, brute strength, swinging his heavy arm back to strike Sarah across the face. She ducked, parrying the blow with her forearm, and drove the butt of her service pistol down against his shoulder, pinning him flat against the floor.

"Clear! Room secure!" shouted a booming voice as Commander Robert Vance led a squad of heavily armed state troopers rushing down the spiral staircase, their rifles raised and tactical lights sweeping the room.

"Get these cuffs on him, now!" Sarah panted, standing up and brushing the dust off her tactical vest as two troopers hauled Gordon to his feet, slamming steel handcuffs tight around his wrists.

Gordon glared at Sarah with pure venom as they dragged him toward the stairs. "You think you've won something tonight, Detective? You’ve only just opened a door you can never close."

"Save it for the judge," Sarah snapped, watching as they led him away.

She turned back to Commander Vance, who was inspecting the server racks and the open ledgers on the mahogany desk.

"Good grief," Vance muttered, flipping through the pages of the primary ledger. "This goes all the way up to the city zoning board and the regional distribution directorate. Millions in embezzled federal relief funds disguised as community aid programs."

"And Michael Carter stumbled right into the middle of it," Sarah said, pointing her flashlight toward the specific page detailing the highway incident. "They murdered him because he wouldn't look the other way when they started routing fake shipments through his delivery schedule."

Vance pulled out a secure data drive from his tactical pouch, plugging it directly into the main server port. "We're downloading the entire database now. The forensic team is securing the perimeter upstairs. Every single person involved in this ring is going down."

As the state troopers systematically cleared the rest of the underground facility, Sarah walked over to the desk and picked up a small, framed photograph that had fallen face-down during the scuffle.

She turned it over.

It was a faded Polaroid photograph of Michael Carter smiling broadly, his arm draped around a young Emily, both of them standing proudly in front of a small, rented house holding a newborn baby Noah.

A heavy wave of emotion washed over her. They were just an ordinary family trying to survive, caught in the gears of a ruthless criminal enterprise that viewed human lives as mere collateral damage.

"Commander," Sarah called out, holding up the photograph. "Make sure this evidence bag is tagged separately. This isn't just about financial fraud anymore. We have a murder case to build."

"Already handled," Vance replied, snapping his tablet shut. "Now, let’s get out of here. You need to check on the hospital detail, and I have a dozen arrest warrants to sign before dawn."
