Chapter 5 - The Ultimatum

The silence in the cramped cabin grew thick and suffocating. Lily stirred slightly in her sleep, murmuring something unintelligible, and I instinctively patted her back, whispering a silent prayer that she wouldn't wake up to this nightmare.

I looked from David to Mark, who was slowly pushing himself up from the floor, wiping the blood from his lip with the back of his hand.

“What kind of choice?” Mark rasped, his voice laced with bitter suspicion. “Are you turning me in to the feds? Is that it? You want to watch me rot in a cell the way you did?”

“The feds already know, Mark,” David said calmly, pulling a thick manila folder from inside his jacket and tossing it onto the small table between us. “The moment your parents handed over the financial records and the original hard drives from your home office, the federal prosecutor’s office re-opened the case. An arrest warrant was issued three hours ago.”

Mark stared at the folder as if it were a venomous snake.

“Then why aren't the police here right now?” I asked, my voice steadying slightly as adrenaline overrode my fear. “Why play games out here in the mountains?”

David turned his attention back to me, his expression softening with a hint of genuine empathy. “Because, Emily, despite everything Mark did, I know what it’s like to have a family depend on you. I didn't want the authorities kicking down your door during Thanksgiving dinner and terrifying your daughter. You deserve dignity, and more importantly, you deserve financial security and a clean break.”

“A clean break?” Mark sneered, stepping forward despite the guard near the door flashing a warning look. “What does that mean? You want to strip me of everything?”

“You already stripped yourself of everything the day you decided to destroy me, Mark,” David replied, his voice chillingly steady. “Here is the deal: The federal agents are waiting at the end of this access road right now. You can walk out there quietly, sign a full confession acknowledging your sole liability for the financial crimes, and surrender yourself without a fight.”

“And if I don’t?” Mark challenged, his eyes narrowing.

“If you don’t,” David said, standing up slowly, “the evidence my team compiled doesn't just implicate you in white-collar fraud. It includes the cover-up of our altercation, the coercion of witnesses, and the illegal transfer of assets into hidden offshore accounts under your wife’s name without her knowledge.”

My blood ran cold. I whipped around to face Mark. “My name? You put illegal funds under my name?”

Mark avoided my gaze, staring fixedly at the floor. That gesture alone was an admission of guilt more damning than any confession. He had set me up as a potential accomplice if things ever went sideways. He had used me as a shield.

“If those charges stick,” David continued relentlessly, “Emily could face federal conspiracy charges, asset forfeiture, and prison time, leaving Lily with no one. But if you cooperate fully and sign the agreement absolving Emily of any prior knowledge or involvement in your schemes, the prosecutor has agreed to drop all secondary investigations against your family.”

Mark stood frozen, the walls closing in around him. For eight years, he had lived a lie, building a fortress of deceit. Now, that fortress was crumbling into dust, and he was the only one left standing inside the wreckage.
