The legal hammer fell swift and hard in the months following the trial. The Travis County District Attorney brought formal criminal charges against both Denise Carter and Mark Morgan based on the evidence exposed during the family court proceedings.
Facing overwhelming video and audio evidence, Mark Morgan pled guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy. He was sentenced to three years in federal prison and ordered to pay full restitution to his venture investors. His career in tech was permanently ruined, and his name became a cautionary tale in Silicon Valley circles.
Denise Carter refused to take a plea deal, clinging to her delusion of innocence until the very end. A jury convicted her of filing false emergency reports, attempted grand larceny, and conspiracy. Given her age and lack of prior felony record, the judge sentenced her to five years of formal probation, 1,000 hours of mandatory community service, and ordered her to pay $45,000 in court fines. To cover her legal debts and fines, Denise was forced to sell her home at a loss and move into a small, modest rental apartment on the outskirts of town. Deprived of the financial subsidies I had provided for years, she was forced to live strictly on her modest social security income.
Amber, while avoiding jail time due to her state cooperation, lost her luxury SUV and was forced to take a minimum-wage job at a retail store to support Sophie. Overcome with shame and guilt, she reached out to me via an attorney-approved letter to apologize, acknowledging the irreparable damage she had caused. I chose not to respond, but I arranged through a third-party trust to ensure Sophie received a modest educational stipend so that the innocent child would not suffer for her mother's sins.
