Part 4: The Arrest

The words hung in the sterile air of the hospital room like a suspended executioner’s blade.

“Daddy... daddy gave me the special vitamin water before school.”

For three seconds, nobody moved. Even the relentless beeping of the heart monitor seemed to stutter in the heavy silence.

I slowly turned my head from my daughter’s pale face toward the doorway. Michael was staring at Emma, his mouth slightly open, color completely draining from his skin until he looked like a statue carved out of old paper.

“Emma,” Michael stammered, taking a half-step forward, his hands trembling violently. “Sweetheart, what... what are you talking about? Daddy didn’t give you anything bad. You must be confused, honey. The hospital medicine is making you see things.”

“No,” Emma whimpered, a tear slipping from the corner of her eye and soaking into the hospital pillow. “It tasted bitter. You said it was a special health drink... you said if I drank it every morning before the big test, I wouldn't feel tired anymore. But it made my tummy burn, Daddy. It made me feel like I was floating away.”

Detective Miller didn’t waste a single second. With a sharp nod to the two uniformed officers stationed outside the door, she pointed directly at Michael.

“Mr. Michael Johnson, turn around and put your hands behind your back. You are under arrest for the suspected poisoning and endangerment of a minor.”

“No! Wait! You don’t understand!” Michael shouted, backing away as the two officers lunged forward, grabbing his arms and forcing them behind his back with practiced efficiency. The metal handcuffs clicked into place with a sharp, brutal snap that echoed off the tile walls.

“Michael, look at me!” I screamed, standing up, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. “Why? Why would you do this to our little girl? What did she ever do to you?”

Michael didn’t look at me. As the officers dragged him toward the door, his eyes were fixed on the floor, his chest heaving with heavy, panicked breaths. Just as they pulled him across the threshold into the hallway, he muttered something so low I almost missed it:

“I had to... they said if I didn't pay off the debt, they’d come for all of us...”

The heavy doors swung shut, cutting off his voice, leaving behind only the steady, rhythmic beep of the monitor and the sound of Emma crying softly under her blankets.
