Chapter 1 - The Unseen Warning

Sophie Miller had been practicing all week for the moment she met her baby brother.
She had carried her favorite doll through the house, supported its head with both hands and whispered, “I’m your big sister.”
But when the seven-year-old reached toward the newborn in Claire’s arms, Claire slapped her hand away.
“Don’t touch him.”
The maternity waiting room went silent.
Sophie froze with one finger still raised.
The small stuffed elephant she had brought slipped from her other hand and landed on the floor.
Daniel stood from the chair beside his wife.
“Claire.”
His voice carried a warning.
Claire pulled the baby tighter against her chest.
“I said don’t touch him.”
Sophie looked at her father.
Her smile was gone.
“I washed my hands.”
Daniel crossed the room and picked up the toy.
“She is his sister.”
Claire’s eyes moved toward the hallway, then back to Sophie.
“I need everyone to stay away from him.”
“Everyone?” Daniel asked. “Or just Sophie?”
His mother, Linda, stood near the doorway with one hand on Sophie’s shoulder.
“She has talked about nothing else all week,” Linda said. “She only wanted to hold his hand.”
Claire said nothing.
The baby stirred beneath the pale blue blanket.
Sophie stepped back.
“Did I do something bad?”
That question changed the way everyone looked at Claire.
A nurse at the desk glanced over.
Two visitors near the window stopped talking.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“No, sweetheart. You did nothing wrong.”
He turned toward Claire.
“You need to apologize.”
Claire’s heart pounded so hard she could hear it.
Her phone was still lying beside her on the chair.
The screen had gone dark, but she could see the last message in her mind.
**Let Sophie hold the baby. That’s how we’ll take him.**
It had arrived less than a minute before Sophie entered the room.
The sender knew the exact time she would arrive.
They knew she was wearing a yellow dress.
They knew Daniel’s mother was bringing her.
And they knew Sophie planned to touch the baby’s hand first.
Claire had received other messages during the final week of her pregnancy.
**You won’t notice when he disappears.**
**You’ll be too busy watching the little girl.**
**Your husband will choose his first child over you.**
She had told no one.
Not Daniel.
Not the hospital.
She had convinced herself they were cruel jokes from someone who disliked her.
Then Sophie walked into the room wearing the exact yellow dress described in the message.
When the child reached out, Claire did not see a seven-year-old girl.
She saw a warning becoming real.
Daniel knelt beside Sophie.
“Come on. We’re going outside.”
Sophie stared at the baby.
“I brought him something.”
“I know.”
“I don’t want it anymore.”
She pushed the stuffed elephant into Daniel’s hands and walked toward the hallway with Linda.
Daniel stood and faced Claire.
“What is wrong with you?”
Claire lowered her voice.
“Please take Sophie away from here.”
His expression changed from anger to disbelief.
“You really don’t want her near him.”
“That isn’t what I said.”
“You shoved her hand away in front of everyone.”
“I was scared.”
“Of Sophie?”
“No.”
“Then explain it.”
Claire glanced toward the nurses’ station.
“Not here.”
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
“You humiliated my daughter, and now you want privacy?”
The baby began to cry.
Claire tried to calm him, but her hands were shaking.
Daniel looked at her as though he no longer recognized the woman he had married.
“I promised Sophie this baby would not replace her,” he said. “You just made her believe I lied.”
He turned and followed his daughter into the hall.
Claire remained alone beneath the bright hospital lights.
For several seconds, she could only listen to the baby crying against her chest.
Then her phone vibrated.
A new message appeared.
**Good. Now he thinks you hate her.**
May you like
Claire stared at the screen.
Another message arrived immediately.
