Chapter 7 - The Healing Journey

By the time the twins turned six on Valentine's Day, our world had transformed completely. We celebrated their birthday not in a quiet apartment with forced smiles, but in the spacious backyard of our new home, surrounded by friends, colleagues from my new job as Director of Patient Advocacy at a non-profit foundation, and pediatric staff who had cared for the girls.
Evan had organized a surprise for the girls: a handcrafted wooden playhouse built under the large oak tree, complete with a tiny reading nook and a purple roof.
"Happy Birthday, my sweet girls," Evan said as Ivy and Hazel blew out six candles on a massive chocolate cake.
"This is the best birthday ever, Daddy!" Ivy cheered, chocolate frosting smeared across her cheek.
Later that evening, after the guests had departed and the twins were fast asleep in their newly decorated bedrooms, Evan and I sat on the porch swing wrapped in a warm wool blanket. The night air was crisp, stars shining brightly across the clear dark sky.
"I received a letter from my mother's attorney today," Evan said quietly, rocking the swing gently with his foot. "She accepted the terms of the plea agreement. She's moving to a private estate in Vermont permanently. She won't be returning to the city."
I looked at him, searching his expression for lingering sorrow. "How do you feel about that?"
"I feel free," Evan answered honestly. "For thirty years, I tried to earn her approval, believing that her strictness was just love in disguise. It took losing you and missing five years of my daughters' lives to see that her control was toxic. I don't hate her, Clara. But I won't let her shadow touch our family ever again."
He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box. My heart skipped a beat as he turned to face me on the swing.
"Six years ago, I let cowardice and deceit rob us of our future," Evan said, his voice deep and emotional. "I can't undo the past, Clara, but I can offer you every tomorrow I have left. I love you with everything I am. Will you marry me and let us build the life we were always meant to have?"

Inside the box was a simple, breathtaking ring—a classic diamond set in rose gold, engraved inside with the words: Always & Forever.
Tears of joy welled in my eyes as I looked at the man who had fought so hard to redeem himself. "Yes, Evan. Yes, a thousand times yes."
