Chapter 8 - The First Birthday Milestone

Louisa’s first birthday party was held in the sunlit backyard of my parents' house, a joyful, vibrant celebration filled with colorful balloons, homemade smash cake, and the laughter of family and close friends who had stood by us through the darkest chapters of our early parenthood.
Louisa was a walking tornado of giggles and curiosity, toddling across the emerald grass with her arms outstretched, chasing our golden retriever mix while my parents cheered her on from the patio chairs.
Miles stood beside me near the barbecue grill, flipping burger patties with practiced ease. He looked healthier, happier, and profoundly more grounded than he had a year ago when we first navigated the terrifying maze of postpartum recovery and betrayal.
"She looks so much like you when she smiles," Miles murmured, handing me a fresh glass of iced tea.
"She has your stubborn streak, though," I replied with a soft smile, bumping my shoulder gently against his. "God help us when she hits her teenage years."
"I deserve every bit of whatever trouble she gives us," he laughed softly, turning to look at me with an expression of deep, abiding reverence. "Thank you for not giving up on me, Cat. Not just on the marriage... but on helping me become a person worth being married to."
"I didn't save the marriage for you, Miles," I said honestly, meeting his gaze. "I saved it because I knew you were capable of change, and because our daughter deserves a father who faces his mistakes head-on rather than hiding from them."

He nodded slowly, reaching out to take my hand. His palm was warm, steady, and entirely calloused from the honest, hard work of rebuilding our lives.
As we watched Louisa smash fistfuls of blue frosting into her hair while everyone around us laughed and applauded, a deep, restorative peace settled over my chest. The trauma of those first six weeks had left scars, but those scars were proof of survival, resilience, and a love that had been tested by fire and emerged infinitely stronger.
